Public Demonstrations in Los Angeles<br />

and San Francisco<br />

WHEN THE PLANS for <strong>the</strong> New York and San Francisco World's<br />

Fairs were first announced <strong>the</strong> expositions seemed to be "naturals"<br />

as a launching place for television. There was some<br />

discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Farnsworth</strong> company having a demonstration<br />

at ei<strong>the</strong>r or both. The Philadelphia plant was so engrossed in<br />

advance research work that <strong>the</strong>re was an inclination to put little<br />

emphasis upon <strong>the</strong> demonstration <strong>the</strong>re. However, Bart Molinari,<br />

who was carrying on as a lone wolf in our San Francisco<br />

laboratories (George Sleeper had joined Dr. Goldmark's staff<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Columbia Broadcasting laboratories), had a determination<br />

to set up a practical<br />

television unit to show what could be<br />

done with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Farnsworth</strong> equipment.<br />

As has been indicated previously, Molinari, whom we<br />

nicknamed Moli, is a very colorful figure, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> a wholesale<br />

baker in San Francisco. He was in high school during <strong>the</strong> early<br />

days <strong>of</strong> radio and became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very first "hams" to set up<br />

a short-wave radio transmission and receiving unit in his home.<br />

It was <strong>the</strong> cherished desire <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r that he finish high<br />
