Background: Recent legislati<strong>on</strong> m<strong>and</strong>ating breast density (BD) notificati<strong>on</strong> assumes a knowledge deficit<br />
am<strong>on</strong>g screening-aged women, but little is known about women’s awareness of BD or its impact <strong>on</strong><br />
mammography sensitivity <strong>and</strong> breast cancer risk.<br />
Methods: Using a probability-based web panel (KnowledgePanel) representative of the United States<br />
populati<strong>on</strong>, we surveyed women aged 40 -74 years regarding their awareness of BD <strong>and</strong> knowledge of the<br />
impact of BD <strong>on</strong> mammography sensitivity <strong>and</strong> breast cancer risk.<br />
Results: Of 2,311 women surveyed, 1,506 completed questi<strong>on</strong>naires. Overall, 58% of women had heard<br />
of BD. Factors significantly correlated with a higher likelihood of having heard of BD include: age older<br />
than 50 years (p < 0.001); White race/ethnicity (p < 0.0001); higher income <strong>and</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al attainment (p<br />
< 0.0001); self-described health status as “very good” or “excellent”(p < 0.01); use of horm<strong>on</strong>e therapy (p<br />
