Background: Mammographic density (MD) adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI) is associated
with breast cancer risk. We conducted a prospective study to determine if growth in childhood and
adolescence predicts risk-associated MD.
Methods: In 1968, the Tasmanian Asthma Study measured height and weight for almost all school
children born in 1961. We obtained measured heights and weights for this cohort from annual school
records for 1969 to 1977. Between 2009 and 2010, for 215 of these women we administered a
questionnaire, including height and weight, and digitised at least one mammogram. Absolute and percent
MD were measured using the computer-assisted method Cumulus. Preece-Baines growth curves were
fitted and missing data imputed under a multivariate normal model. We used linear regression to assess
the association between square root MD and covariates.
Results: Both absolute and percent MD adjusted for age and current BMI were negatively associated with
log BMI at each of ages 7 to 15, and positively associated with age at menarche. When fitted together, log
BMI at age 15 remained negatively associated (p < 0.00001), explaining about 15% of the variance (cf.
