Let’s Celebrate!
January
“The year began with lunch.”
So opens Peter Mayle’s gloriously gastronomique, politely
raucous tale A Year in Provence about life in the French countryside
through the eyes of recovering Londoners, a perfect read
for anyone negotiating life with another culture, which, these
days, is most of us.
The book is as hard to turn away from as an action flick and
pumps me full of wonder, laughter, galloping goodness and
gusto for the craft of writing. Each chapter features one month;
seasons and the natural world have as much personality in
Southern France as Mayle’s neighbour, Massot, the semi-militant,
maniacal recluse who believes he’ll sell his shack for millions to
the right tourist, if he’ll ever let one get within 100 metres. A Year
in Provence would wither without the age-old, mystical connection
of people to their food and the terra firma that provides it;
daily bread warrants daily celebration. And antics.
Our food articles this edition fill me with similar giddiness,
perhaps more so since their magic, to me, stems from a different
galaxy: an army was saved, an important battle won and a city
renamed when a nourishing plant capable of melting snow was
discovered. (“Tonifying Winter Soup,” page 118) Glutinous rice,
stronger than cement (as it turns out), has lasted for centuries as
exterior walls. (“Hakka Lei Cha,” page 114) The hospitality of the
Hakka people, an ethnic group who left their homeland 2,200
years ago and still call themselves “guests” wherever they live,
revolves around their food and circles into consciousness every
Chinese New Year when families become guests of one another
in ongoing celebrations.
Shen Yun Performing Arts members like the sparkling Kexin Li
on our cover won’t be at home to celebrate — they’ll be bringing
the house down in venues around the world until late spring.
We’re honoured to welcome them to Canada in January and
can’t wait to see their 2014 backdrops, costumes, choreography,
and orchestra. Read about what led Li to finally find her heart’s
path on page 40, “Butterfly Wings.”

忠 言 直 諫
儘 管 連 年 征 戰 沙 場 , 戰 功 顯 赫 , 但 李 世 民 深 知 「 打
天 下 」 與 「 守 天 下 」 是 兩 回 事 。 他 自 幼 沒 有 被 立 為 太
子 , 所 接 受 的 教 導 中 , 關 於 治 理 國 家 的 內 容 有 限 。 所

One of the most celebrated Chinese officials of
the Tang dynasty defied his Emperor by slaying
a sinful dragon. In his sleep.
The Dragon King of Jinghe River secretly dared to
change the amount and time of the rainfall, violating
heavenly law and incurring the wrath of Heaven. But
the Dragon King visited Emperor Tang Taizong in his
dreams and pleaded for mercy. In his dream, the Emperor
agreed to spare the Dragon King.
Wei Zheng had been appointed by the Heavens as the
official beheader of wayward dragons. Tang Taizong tried
to prevent Wei from executing this particular dragon by
calling him to court to play chess. But Wei fell asleep during
the match, and as he slept, his soul went to execute the
Dragon King all the same, according to Heavenly Law.
The incident, while unusual, was typical of the relationship
between Taizong and Wei Zheng. The 17 years they
were together were marked by similar occasions: the two
would disagree, Wei would win, and the final outcome
would be the best one for the Emperor and the kingdom.
Wei Zheng’s role as a loyal and stalwart adviser to Emperor
Taizong has been remembered through Chinese
history, and is an example of the Confucian principle
of the ruler and his subjects: the Emperor wise, careful,
and considered; the adviser respectful but never hesitating
to air concerns for the benefit of all.
During his career as an imperial official, Wei Zheng
advised the Emperor on more than 200 affairs of state,
and wrote hundreds of thousands of characters of
memoranda to the throne. He ceaselessly expressed his
views and, as long as he thought himself in the right, he
wouldn’t back down.
Eventually, the Emperor could not bear Wei Zheng’s
argumentativeness. He asked his brother-in-law, loud
enough so that Wei could hear:

慌 不 忙 地 回 答 說 :「 可 惜 當 初 太 子 沒 聽 我 的 話 。 要 不 然 ,
也 不 會 發 生 後 來 的 事 了 。」 這 就 是 典 型 的 魏 徵 式 的 言 辭 ,
沒 有 人 可 以 否 認 他 話 語 的 真 實 性 , 可 也 沒 有 人 願 意 面 對 這
血 淋 淋 的 單 刀 直 入 。 李 世 民 聽 到 這 番 話 後 , 也 一 時 愣 住
了 。 不 過 , 他 覺 得 面 前 這 個 人 很 有 趣 , 習 慣 了 統 領 千 軍 萬
馬 在 戰 場 上 奮 勇 廝 殺 的 他 , 欣 賞 這 樣 的 勇 氣 和 膽 識 , 更 喜

讓 後 來 成 為 唐 太 宗 的 李 世 民 沒 想 到 的 是 , 這 一 次 對 話
只 是 魏 徵 的 熱 身 。 在 他 後 來 十 幾 年 的 為 官 生 涯 中 , 曾 先 後
陳 諫 二 百 多 件 事 , 寫 下 的 奏 表 有 幾 十 萬 字 。 他 不 僅 不 知 疲
倦 地 「 嘮 叨 」, 還 特 別 固 執 , 只 要 是 他 認 為 正 確 的 事 情 ,
必 然 要 堅 持 到 底 。 有 一 次 , 唐 太 宗 實 在 受 不 了 他 在 朝 堂 之
上 的 糾 纏 , 就 向 一 旁 的 長 孫 無 忌 求 助 :「 你 看 魏 徵 每 次 向
朕 進 諫 時 , 只 要 朕 沒 接 受 他 的 意 見 , 他 就 不 答 應 , 這 到
底 是 怎 麼 回 事 啊 」 還 沒 等 長 孫 無 忌 答 話 , 魏 徵 自 己 就 接
過 話 頭 說 :「 陛 下 做 事 做 得 不 對 , 我 才 進 諫 。 如 果 陛 下 不
聽 我 的 勸 告 , 我 又 立 即 順 從 陛 下 , 那 事 情 還 是 得 按 照 錯 誤
的 旨 意 去 做 , 豈 不 違 背 了 我 進 諫 的 初 衷 嗎 」 太 宗 說 :
「 你 當 時 應 承 一 下 , 顧 全 朕 的 體 面 , 退 朝 之 後 , 再 單 獨
向 朕 進 諫 , 難 道 不 行 嗎 」 魏 徵 解 釋 道 :「 從 前 , 舜 告
誡 群 臣 , 不 要 當 面 順 從 我 , 背 後 又 另 講 一 套 , 這 不 是 臣 下
忠 君 的 表 現 , 而 是 陽 奉 陰 違 的 奸 佞 行 為 。 所 以 , 對 於 陛 下
的 說 法 , 為 臣 不 敢 苟 同 。」 這 番 話 講 得 儘 管 直 接 了 點 , 卻
也 句 句 在 理 , 太 宗 最 終 坦 然 接 受 , 點 頭 認 可 。
就 這 樣 , 魏 徵 和 唐 太 宗 相 處 了 十 七 年 , 一 個 直 言 進

亡 中 總 結 出 的 「 兼 聽 則 明 , 偏 聽 則 暗 」, 都 被 太 宗 時 刻 銘
記 在 心 , 更 被 後 世 帝 王 們 當 作 了 治 世 警 言 。
魏 徵 斬 龍
在 中 國 民 間 流 傳 著 這 樣 一 個 傳 說 , 說 的 是 剛 直 忠 勇 的
魏 徵 , 不 僅 受 到 唐 太 宗 的 器 重 , 甚 至 連 天 庭 都 看 中 了 他 的
才 能 , 封 他 為 人 曹 官 斬 殺 孽 龍 。
故 事 的 起 因 是 大 唐 都 城 長 安 之 外 的 涇 河 龍 王 , 因 嫉 恨
都 城 中 的 一 位 算 命 先 生 , 而 與 他 打 賭 第 二 天 的 天 氣 。 龍 王
一 時 嘔 氣 , 為 了 賭 贏 竟 私 自 更 改 了 雨 量 與 時 辰 , 觸 犯 了 天
條 。 天 庭 第 二 天 午 時 三 刻 便 要 派 人 曹 官 魏 徵 誅 殺 他 , 龍 王
情 急 之 下 托 夢 給 唐 太 宗 李 世 民 求 救 , 太 宗 滿 口 答 應 幫 他 。
第 二 天 , 太 宗 為 了 拖 住 魏 徵 不 去 殺 龍 王 , 把 他 召 到 內
庭 與 自 己 下 棋 。 眼 看 午 時 三 刻 就 要 到 了 , 魏 徵 突 然 倒 在 棋
盤 上 呼 呼 大 睡 起 來 。 太 宗 一 看 , 大 喜 過 望 , 以 為 這 下 魏 徵
沒 法 去 殺 龍 王 了 。 見 睡 夢 中 的 魏 徵 額 頭 汗 珠 直 冒 , 神 態 焦
急 , 太 宗 心 中 憐 惜 他 過 於 操 勞 , 自 己 悄 悄 走 到 近 前 為 他 搧
涼 。 突 然 , 宮 中 傳 來 一 陣 喧 鬧 聲 , 太 宗 心 中 一 驚 , 卻 見 大
將 秦 叔 寶 奔 進 來 稟 告 說 :「 剛 剛 長 安 的 鬧 市 中 , 不 知 何 故
從 天 上 落 下 一 顆 龍 頭 。」 太 宗 一 看 眼 前 的 龍 頭 , 正 是 夢 中
向 自 己 求 救 的 龍 王 。 這 時 , 魏 徵 醒 了 過 來 說 :「 此 龍 因 觸
犯 天 條 , 依 天 令 當 被 臣 於 今 日 午 時 三 刻 處 斬 。 臣 雖 身 在 此
地 , 夢 中 早 已 提 劍 追 龍 而 去 , 正 焦 急 別 讓 他 逃 了 , 幸 得 借
陛 下 三 搧 涼 風 , 追 上 孽 龍 , 將 他 處 斬 。」 太 宗 知 道 了 事 情
的 前 因 後 果 , 無 奈 天 意 難 違 , 自 己 還 是 沒 能 救 下 龍 王 , 也
褒 揚 了 魏 徵 懲 惡 揚 善 、 秉 公 執 法 。
誰 知 , 這 涇 河 龍 王 后 來 因 怨 恨 太 宗 言 而 無 信 , 夜 夜 來
到 宮 中 攪 擾 , 還 想 拉 太 宗 到 冥 殿 閻 君 那 裏 討 說 法 。 最 後 ,
只 得 讓 尉 遲 恭 和 秦 叔 寶 兩 員 大 將 持 鞭 舉 鑭 把 守 宮 殿 正 門 ,
魏 徵 則 扼 守 後 門 , 這 才 鎮 住 了 龍 王 。 太 宗 擔 心 三 人 夜 夜 守
護 , 過 於 辛 勞 , 便 令 畫 師 將 三 人 的 形 像 繪 於 宮 門 之 上 , 結

限 的 悲 傷 和 失 落 , 他 登 上 苑 西 樓 望 著 魏 徵 的 靈 柩 失 聲 痛
哭 , 還 命 令 百 官 送 喪 至 郊 外 , 並 親 筆 撰 寫 魏 徵 的 碑 文 。
他 思 念 魏 徵 不 已 , 對 侍 臣 說 :「 人 以 銅 為 鏡 , 可 以 正 衣
冠 , 以 古 為 鏡 , 可 以 見 興 替 , 以 人 為 鏡 , 可 以 知 得 失 。
魏 徵 沒 , 朕 亡 一 鏡 矣 !」 被 皇 帝 視 作 明 鑒 自 己 行 為 得 失
的 鏡 子 , 若 魏 徵 在 天 有 靈 , 想 必 也 會 放 下 一 貫 的 冷 硬 面
孔 , 會 心 一 笑 吧 !

“Do you see that whenever I go against Wei Zheng’s
advice, he doesn’t accept it What’s going on here” Wei
Zheng, without being asked, piped up.
“It is only when Your Majesty does not do things correctly
that I admonish. If Your Majesty does not listen
to my advice, and I immediately obey Your Majesty, and
that matter is handled wrongly, would that not be contrary
to the original intention of my remonstrance”
Taizong asked why Wei could not simply stay quiet during
court, and then present his disagreement afterwards.
“During ancient times,” Wei said, “Shun [a legendary
leader] warned his ministers not to obey him in public
and speak otherwise in private, as this does not show a
subject’s loyalty toward his monarch, but instead craft
and fawning. Therefore, I do not agree with Your Majesty’s
remarks.” The statement was sharp, direct, decisive
— and every word of it was reasonable. His Highness
simply nodded in thought.
Wei even asserted his views about the Emperor’s personal
habits. He believed, for example, that Taizong was
too fond of hunting and falconry. Taizong even had a
little house for his collection of hawks, and would play
with them for hours.
One day His Majesty got a new baby hawk, and Wei
spotted him with it. Wei approached the Emperor. The
Emperor, embarrassed, stuffed the tiny creature into
one of his sleeves and met with Wei. Wei now gave the
Emperor a lesson: rather than a quick chat, he deliberately
kept the conversation going. After Wei left, Emperor
Taizong removed the hawk from his clothing only
to find that it had suffocated. His Highness never wasted
any more time on the birds.
On another occasion, Wei Zheng heard that the Emperor
was heading to Mount Zhongnan for a hunt. Wei,
intending to short-circuit the Emperor’s obsession,
waited at the entrance of the palace, but Taizong never
came out. Entering the palace, Wei found Taizong in his
hunting attire, going nowhere.
“I heard that Your Majesty was going hunting. Why
haven’t you left” The Emperor answered with a smile.
“I was going to, but I knew you would come and stop
me, so I have decided not to hunt after all. You can relax
now and go home!” Wei left with a smile.
In 643 AD, after giving 17 years of loyal service and
fearless advice, Wei Zheng became sick. When he died,
Emperor Taizong was filled with grief and loss. There
would be no more unsolicited advice or banter with his
most dedicated subject. The Emperor climbed to the
top of a building and wept. He ordered all court officials
to participate in the funeral procession, and personally
walked with it to the outskirts of Chang’an, the capital.
The Emperor wrote this inscription on Wei Zheng’s
tombstone, expressing ideas that have resonated in Chinese
thought for centuries: “Put a slab of copper as a mirror
in front of me, and I can straighten out my robe. Put history
as a mirror in front of me, and I can identify the troubling
signs of the rise and fall of a society. If I have a man as a mirror
who reflects my flaws, then I can correct my mistakes.
I constantly keep these three mirrors to prevent me from
erring. With Wei Zheng’s passing, I have lost a mirror!”

the artistic level she is at today, she smoothed
over the twists and turns and ups and downs of her story
so it almost sounded uneventful. Now at the top echelon
in what some say is the finest performing arts company in
the world, her journey was anything but.
An eye for beauty
Li’s eyes are always smiling because she’s exceptional at
discovering and appreciating beautiful things. Born in
China, she immigrated to New Zealand with her mother
when she was 12 years old. That pristine, magnificent
landscape seemed to open its arms to young Li and spread
out the very picture of nature in front of her.
“Growing up, I studied drawing and loved photography.
I still do, especially landscape photography,” she
said. “After travelling all over the world, New Zealand’s
beauty is still my favourite. Photographs of New Zealand
look like carefully composed landscape paintings
to me.”

樂 觀 的 心 態
到 了 「 飛 天 」, 可 欣 才 瞭 解 到 , 舞 臺 上 看 似 舉 重
若 輕 的 曼 妙 中 國 古 典 舞 , 可 不 像 按 按 快 門 那 麼 簡 單 。 不
過 , 難 又 有 甚 麼 關 係 呢 新 西 蘭 的 山 海 遼 闊 , 也 造 就 了
可 欣 樂 觀 豁 達 的 天 性 , 別 人 都 覺 得 痛 苦 不 堪 的 兩 道 坎 :
想 家 和 基 本 功 訓 練 , 到 了 她 這 裏 都 不 算 甚 麼 大 問 題 。
「 來 『 飛 天 』 之 前 , 我 媽 媽 說 我 正 處 在 青 春 叛 逆
期 , 脾 氣 很 不 好 , 經 常 和 她 吵 。 媽 媽 對 我 一 直 要 求 很 嚴
格 , 可 她 越 是 這 樣 , 我 就 越 叛 逆 。 所 以 來 到 紐 約 之 後 ,
我 非 但 不 想 家 , 還 覺 得 終 於 沒 人 管 了 , 挺 高 興 的 。」 可
欣 這 番 話 讓 人 有 點 哭 笑 不 得 。 事 實 上 , 離 開 父 母 之 後 ,
獨 自 在 異 國 它 鄉 生 活 , 讓 可 欣 迅 速 成 熟 起 來 , 連 她 的 父
母 都 驚 異 於 她 的 變 化 。 她 開 始 變 得 懂 事 , 懂 得 體 諒 別
人 。 在 這 個 過 程 中 , 她 究 竟 克 服 了 多 少 生 活 上 的 困 難 、
如 何 一 點 點 適 應 了 集 體 的 生 活 , 其 中 經 歷 的 曲 折 , 外 人
是 很 難 從 她 的 笑 容 中 讀 到 的 。
「 我 有 時 心 裏 也 會 急 , 也 會 有 不 開 心 , 但 我 會 克
制 自 己 儘 量 不 發 作 出 來 , 然 後 私 下 裏 慢 慢 說 服 自 己 去 往
好 處 想 啊 ! 不 要 太 放 在 心 上 啊 ! 很 快 就 調 整 過 來 了 。」
更 況 且 , 相 比 生 活 上 遇 到 的 困 難 , 可 欣 在 舞 蹈 專 業 學 習
上 遭 遇 的 困 難 要 大 得 多 。
Was the transition from visual artist to performing artist a
natural one Not for Li.
“I had the height and flexibility of a dancer,” she said, but
not the desire to be one. Even though her family urged her
to apply to the top classical Chinese dance school in the
world, Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, “I never considered
becoming a professional dancer. I was so immersed in my
world of photography and painting.”
She took the entrance exam anyway and was accepted in
2007. But she let the registration period slip by, opting to
stay in New Zealand. When the entrance exam came around
again, she threw her hat in once more, albeit apathetically.
She didn’t pass.
However, after taking the test for the third time and being
admitted in 2008, Li’s heart finally aligned with a career in
classical Chinese dance. Something had altered her course.
“It was because I saw two consecutive performances of
Shen Yun,” she said.
In April 2008, Shen Yun toured New Zealand for the first
time. Parliament members sent messages of support, the
chief of New Zealand’s native Maori people wrote a poem
to welcome them, the country’s leading artists attended on
opening night, and Chinese people who attended the show
were deeply touched to see their culture at its best.
What Li had only dreamed artistically possible was suddenly
right before her eyes when the curtain rose. Sweeping,
animated backdrops and handmade costumes from
China’s dynasties and ethnicities were brought to life by
graceful, dynamic dancers.
Li didn’t drag her feet again. Instead of searching with a
camera in the mountains and the seaside for snippets of
beauty, she decided it was better to devote herself to creating
extraordinary heavenly scenes and other visual feasts
with Shen Yun artists, many of whom are graduates of Fei
Tian Academy.
After her third and final entrance exam, she boarded a
plane for New York.
The elusive key to success
Right away, Li discovered that the other-worldly grace of classical
Chinese dance doesn’t come as easily as snapping a camera’s
shutter. It was painful, “but what did that matter” she thought.
The two hurdles that confront most Fei Tian newcomers —
homesickness and the difficult training required to reach top
form — didn’t pose a problem for her; something else did.

以 總 覺 得 自 己 不 協 調 , 笨 笨 的 , 動 作 學 得 特 別 慢 。」 這
一 點 , 被 她 嚇 跑 的 一 個 個 「 小 老 師 」 是 最 好 的 證 明 。 原
來 , 見 可 欣 學 得 慢 , 老 師 就 安 排 了 很 多 同 學 來 幫 助 她 ,
許 多 同 學 因 為 實 在 教 不 會 她 動 作 , 紛 紛 「 落 荒 而 逃 」。
可 欣 自 己 也 覺 得 挺 對 不 住 熱 心 的 同 學 們 。「 同 學 真 的 很
耐 心 地 在 教 我 , 可 我 就 是 學 不 會 。」 後 來 , 還 是 曾 經 的
視 覺 藝 術 基 礎 幫 可 欣 走 出 了 困 境 。
「 我 就 琢 磨 啊 ! 看 那 些 動 作 做 得 好 看 的 同 學 , 她
們 為 甚 麼 做 得 好 看 啊 那 個 姿 勢 是 怎 麼 擺 的 在 畫 面 中
的 感 覺 是 怎 麼 樣 的 如 果 搞 不 懂 , 我 就 去 問 她 們 , 妳 做
這 個 動 作 , 為 甚 麼 要 這 麼 做 妳 想 表 現 和 傳 達 甚 麼 她
們 會 一 步 一 步 給 我 講 , 我 就 逐 漸 學 會 了 。」 也 許 是 學 舞
蹈 動 作 的 過 程 已 經 夠 艱 辛 , 別 人 眼 中 最 辛 苦 的 基 本 功 訓
練 , 如 壓 腿 、 下 腰 等 , 在 可 欣 的 眼 中 反 倒 不 算 甚 麼 了 。
「 就 是 天 天 練 , 一 直 堅 持 下 去 。 我 覺 得 保 持 一 顆
平 常 心 就 好 , 不 要 把 自 己 的 付 出 和 辛 苦 看 得 那 麼 重 , 樂

美 麗 的 旅 程

她 曾 經 熱 愛 的 繪 畫 和 攝 影 也 在 幫 助 她 更 加 投 入 進
舞 蹈 中 。「 在 我 跳 蒙 古 頂 碗 舞 時 , 我 的 父 親 恰 好 剛 去 了
一 趟 蒙 古 , 他 也 是 個 攝 影 愛 好 者 , 為 我 拍 了 許 多 照 片 回
來 。」 當 可 欣 站 在 舞 臺 上 舞 蹈 時 , 眼 前 彷 彿 看 見 了 照 片
裏 的 美 景 ,「 天 蒼 蒼 , 野 茫 茫 , 風 吹 草 低 見 牛 羊 。」 一
望 無 際 的 大 草 原 , 碧 藍 的 天 空 中 漂 浮 著 朵 朵 白 雲 , 她 的
腳 步 好 像 真 的 踏 在 了 柔 軟 的 草 地 上 , 在 歡 樂 地 躍 動 著 ,
這 種 真 摯 的 情 感 隨 著 動 作 傳 遞 出 去 , 感 染 了 所 有 人 。
What confounded Li was the fluidity she saw in other
dancers and the ability to translate dance combinations into
her own body. This eluded her to the point that, one by one,
fellow classmates who were secretly sent by her teachers to
act as “little tutors” gave up trying to help her.
“They were so patient with me, but I just could not get
it!” After mulling it over deeply, her visual art training finally
took over to solve the problem.
“I sat and observed those classmates whose movements
are so beautiful. How did they do that How did
they hold themselves What would they look like in a
photo from another angle If I couldn’t figure it out, I
would ask: ‘I saw you doing this move, why did you do
it this way What did you want to convey’ Then, they
would explain it to me step by step. So, I gradually mastered
the movements.”
With that puzzle unlocked, Li improved faster than most of
her peers. Shen Yun management soon noticed her and she
was quickly chosen to go on tour with the renowned company.
A graceful butterfly was starting to spread her wings.
Stretching out
Now, when the curtain rises, Li is part of the amazing picture.
Although she and a dozen fellow dancers “move as if
they are one person,” as audience members often describe
them, her individuality forms the basis for her inner bearing
and her connection to the visual arts constantly adds
depth to her performance.
“When I was performing the Mongolian Bowl Dance, my
father happened to have just returned from a trip to Mongolia.
He is also a photography enthusiast, and he took lots
of pictures of the country for me to see,” she said.
Onstage, in Mongolian costume, the vast country’s scenery
appeared in her mind’s eye: herds moving on the endless
green steppe, white clouds floating in the azure sky.
Her feet seemed to have really stepped onto the soft grassland
and she danced with joy in her heart. Such sincere
emotions are one of the things audiences say they’re so
touched by at Shen Yun performances.
With every year that goes by, Li’s understanding of classical
Chinese dance deepens. She is naturally feminine and
sensitive to the point of being quite delicate sometimes,
she says, which means she is comfortable in choreography
that “demonstrates the ancient Chinese ladies’ charm.”

她 , 這 個 生 日 必 然 要 過 得 忙 碌 又 辛 苦 了 。「 我 當 時 突 然
想 起 了 一 件 事 , 我 媽 媽 說 我 出 生 時 , 醫 院 發 生 了 事 故 ,
停 電 了 , 幸 好 轉 院 及 時 , 我 和 媽 媽 才 僥 倖 躲 過 一 劫 , 平
安 活 了 下 來 。 也 許 上 天 當 時 眷 顧 我 , 就 是 為 讓 我 現 在 跳
舞 的 吧 !」 說 到 這 裏 , 可 欣 又 笑 了 起 來 , 看 來 沒 有 甚 麼

Other times, though, those traits bog her down, such
as when she participated in New Tang Dynasty Television’s
Fifth International Classical Chinese Dance
Competition.
She choreographed a piece titled “Admiring Spring’s
Beauty” but could hardly bring herself to show it to her
teachers, afraid of what they would say about the piece’s
imperfections. Her optimism and light-heartedness,
which she largely attributes to New Zealand’s culture,
eventually triumphed, allowing her to confront her own
problems and correct the piece’s shortcomings. Her solo
won the second runner-up in the adult female division
of the dance competition.
When her father once complained about dancing not
being a stable job, she explained to him that classical
Chinese dance is here to stay.
“Classical Chinese dance will spread throughout the
entire world in the future,” she told him.
“It is the most effective in expressing the [performers’]
abundant emotions, narrating the storyline well and
portraying the characters. Speaking from an aesthetic
point of view, classical Chinese dance’s movements
are particularly pleasing and flowing. Every gesture or
emotion coming from the dancers toward the audience
looks to be in the most comfortable state, which gives
the audience endless enjoyment.”

On our way to Susanne Hou’s home for an interview,
her rendition of Pablo de Sarasate’s classic
composition Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) echoed
in our car. Her surging, impassioned notes evoked sorrow,
empathy and vitality. It is difficult to believe that the hands
of a delicate Chinese girl called this music forth without
seeing a video of her performance.
Google “Yi-Jia Susanne Hou” and find a gold medal winner
at the 1997 Pablo Sarasate International Violin Competition
in Spain, the 1999 Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin
Competition in Italy, and the 1999 Concours Marguerite
Long-Jacques Thibaud in France. Susanne Hou has written
an unprecedented chapter in the history of violinists.
When we arrived at Hou’s Toronto home, we were greeted
by her father, Alec Hou, also a master violinist. He is probably
the happiest person in the world, having graduated from the
Shanghai Conservatory of Music, later becoming the Shanghai
Ballet Company Orchestra’s Concertmaster, and now
having seen his daughter’s stupendous achievements. As we
chatted, Susanne, smiling, walked down from upstairs and
greeted us politely. The master violinist on the stage was now
the girl next door.
“My dad hoped to teach me to play violin when I was three
years old. I was still too small to hold the instrument; I had to
wait until I was four.” Mr. Hou treasures a photo of four-yearold
Susanne practicing. Her chubby little face, gazing intently,
is pressed against a tiny instrument as she draws a bow.

“At Christmas that year, we went to my brother’s house for
dinner,” he said. “I discovered a good piece of maple there
and made Susanne’s first violin with it, the one in the photo.”
Thirty-two years later, Mr. Hou still has that keepsake.
“My father said to me that if I wanted to learn to play violin,
I had to practice for two hours every day. I was just four
years old. I didn’t understand two hours. He taught me:
the long hand goes around to 12 o’clock twice. After careful
consideration, I told my father: OK, I can do it.” Since
then, practice time has only increased and never paused,
even when Susanne was sick, not an easy task for a young
child. But to this day, she still highly values the commitment
she made and the lesson her father taught her. Her
character and willpower are forged of platinum.
Susanne made rapid progress, becoming more and more
skillful under her father’s strict guidance. When she was
12 years old, to give her the best opportunities available,
her father sent Susanne’s practice recordings to Master
Violinist Dorothy DeLay of New York’s world-famous
Juilliard School of Music. Hou soon received an invitation
to audition. After listening to Hou’s performance in person,
the “Godmother of Violin” was stunned. She admitted
Susanne into Juilliard immediately.
Hou lived up to the Godmother’s expectations. When
Hou returned from Paris after winning gold at the Concours,
the then 84-year-old DeLay could not sleep out of
excitement. Susanne recalls spending an entire hour on
her way to a restaurant, as countless students and teachers
came up to congratulate her.
As she plays complex emotional compositions, Hou expresses
a profound understanding of life. We asked how
she gains her insights and listened to the struggles she and
her parents went through.
“My parents used to be China’s best violinists. China has

one billion people. To be at the top, I think, is far more
difficult than in Canada. With the arrival of the Cultural
Revolution, their artistic careers were interrupted
completely and they chose to leave the country. We came
to Canada in 1981, when I was 4, which meant that they
had to start from zero. Nobody knew who they were, and
all of their past splendours vanished.” In a foreign environment,
the Hou family struggled financially. Susanne’s
father purchased her second violin from a thrift store.
“I think that a lot of people are given opportunities.
My parents were not.” Susanne Hou recounted when she
was 15 years old, upon realizing the sacrifices her parents
made for her violin studies, she considered relinquishing
her violin career. Her loving father, for example, drove her
back and forth from Toronto to New York for her Julliard
lessons: she was too young to live in the city on her own.
When she told him her thoughts, Mr. Hou remained unusually
calm, simply telling her to make her own decisions.
Susanne didn’t touch her violin that day. When she went to
bed, she found herself constantly tossing and turning, unable
to fall asleep. She realized that the violin had already
integrated into her life, as she grew up, and had become a
part of her soul. She could not part with her violin.
“My family’s experiences have made me grateful, and I
cherish everything I have. It is so easy to do everything
that’s fun. But it doesn’t mean anything. I believe that
music has a connection to something deeper down.”

Today, what Hou holds in her hands is probably the
most coveted instrument of any of the world’s violins
— crafted in 1733 by the famed Italian violinmaker
Guarneri del Gesu, with an estimated value of around 6
million US dollars. The Chicago-based Stradivari Society
loaned this violin to her in 2009, and she has been playing
on it ever since. Once used by the legendary violinist
Fritz Kreisler, this masterpiece is one of only 150 del
Gesu ever fashioned.
A young violinist, her artistic career is still a long path
for her to travel. Her medals launched world tours. Her recording
ambitions are equally compelling, including work
with the London Philharmonic, and the interpretation of
Chinese classics. She is also mentoring rising performers
by sponsoring concerts and contests. She is even bottling
her own red wine in Kelowna, exploring what she perceives
as subtle cultural relationships between wine and
music. Hou believes that “music is the most honest expression
of the heart. I use honesty to experience life and
perceive music.”

Thomas Pheasant’s smile is warm, immediately engaging,
with a twinkle that says this is a man who
enjoys life. A world-traveller who’s worked with
presidents and royalty, he’s just as comfortably stylish in
an Armani suit as in jeans with a blazer. And when it comes
to design, his passion and knowledge are matched only by
his creativity.
Thomas’ design philosophy interweaves classic minimalism,
tradition, and vision to fashion interiors with a balanced
tranquility that’s become his signature. Surprisingly,
his career began accidentally when he purchased a derelict
house in Washington, DC, during the early 1970s.
Despite suffering from the severe lack of funds experienced
by most new college graduates, Thomas secured a
mortgage and began rebuilding the house. “I ended up
creating a modern and really quite simple interior whose
architectural energy was derived from one very special
feature: a centrally located spiral staircase gorgeously illuminated
by an enormous skylight,” he says in his book
Thomas Pheasant: Simply Serene.
By the time the renovation was complete, however, he
confesses to being “somewhat discouraged” to discover
there was no money for furniture. The solution “I threw
some grey leather pillows around, and that was that.” But
when the local paper caught wind of it, Thomas was hailed
as Washington’s new, young, “radically spare” designer.
Today, Thomas continues to refine and redefine layering
neutral colour palettes with texture and form to create interiors
with a timeless serenity. His furniture collections are
recognized worldwide and he counts being the first American
designer to exhibit at the Pavillon des Antiquaires et des
Beaux Arts in Paris, France among his many achievements.

Celebrate beauty
Thomas believes the past should inspire, but stresses good
design is more than simply reproducing historical excellence.
“I tell students, get out of your cave — see what’s
beautiful, what monuments have lasted for centuries, what
proportions resonate with the human psyche. Even when
a house needs to be totally renovated, to decide what elements
should be celebrated and what should be taken
away, you must really look around you.”
As part of the process, Thomas says he often takes clients
on tours of local galleries, artisan studios, and other cultural
venues. “We’re not shopping, only looking. It’s wonderful
for inspiration and a great way to get to know people.”
Savour the experience
“Be willing to experiment,” Thomas says when asked for
hints about personalizing a space. “No one is going to die
if you pick the wrong colour for your walls. But so often
people just go the safe route. They buy the beige sofa or
off-white paint without thinking how it will actually work
in their home.”
His second suggestion concerns passion — choose objects
and designs that speak to your heart, not the art school
textbook. “Don’t pick a dining room table just because you
need one and it’s from a good furniture maker — buy it
because you love it. Likewise, if you have 20 pieces of art

On the home front
Thomas’ newest project is one he’s particularly excited
about — the US presidential guesthouse. “Blair House hasn’t
been completely redone since the late 1970s,” he says.
“When foreign dignitaries visit, the last thing they want
is a ‘vanilla room.’ It’s going to be thrilling to create an
environment that keeps the romance and elegance alive.”
When will the new Blair House be complete “Never,” he says
with what looks remarkably like a wink. “But we do expect the
first four or five rooms will be done sometime in the spring.”

Rimona suitcases travel high, low and withstand bullets.
Now made of a lighter-than-plastic polycarbonate,
even the earliest wooden trunks from this firm,
founded in 1898, were crafted for their portability. Originally
named Paul Moszeck’s Kofferfabrik, the company rebranded
as Rimowa in 1941.
Recall the death-defying performance of Tom Cruise in the
film Mission Impossible IV. A silver-colored suitcase, containing
a nuclear bomb detonator, accompanied him through his
high-altitude falls and tumbles. The little box’s performance
was eye-catching. Despite numerous plunges and squashes,
amazingly, the suitcase remained intact. And at the end of the
film, Cruise still had to rack his brain for its combination.
The phoenix
A great fire destroyed Rimowa’s manufacturing plant in 1937.
Richard Morszeck, the company’s second-generation owner,
stood in front of the ruins for a long time, unable to look away.
Sheets of aircraft aluminium which had not been destroyed
by the fire inspired him: Rimowa would rely on this metal to
stage its comeback. The factory resumed operations with the
production of aluminium luggage.
Richard admired the WWII Junker JU52 aircraft’s corrugated
metal skin, a copper-aluminium alloy. The skin’s structure

In 1950, Rimowa applied the concept to all of its products. Simple,
minimalist and eye-pleasing, the pattern became Rimowa’s
unique style. Even the global headquarters building is grooved.
Riding the wind
Rimowa has never stopped progressing. President Dieter
Morszeck, third-generation of the family, has lead the company
even higher.
Dieter is passionate about aviation. Previously, however, when
he flew airplanes in his spare time, he could never find suitable
luggage. The Pilot series, specially designed for aviation personnel
and business travelers, is now a Rimowa product line. This
series is the most frequently featured in Hollywood movies.
Dieter also has a passion for photography, which compelled
him to create cases tailored for photographic equipment.
In 1976, the “waterproof suitcase” collection was created.
According to the company’s repeated experiments,
even when these are submerged 20 meters under water, no
water infiltrates. Professional photographers, journalists
and media production personnel now have trustworthy
guardians for their equipment.

What are you made of
Rimowa aims scientific and technological progress to efforts
on improving the user-friendliness of their products. In another
stroke of innovation, Dieter added magnesium into the
original aluminium alloy. The new blend is not only more
durable, but also weighs less than plastic.
Then, in 2000, the world’s first polycarbonate suitcase was
born under Dieter’s leadership. Polycarbonate is highly heatresistant,
flame-retardant, crash-proof and impact-resistant.
The world’s lightest suitcases — Rimowa’s Salsa Air collection
— use this material. The suitcases are unforgettably gorgeous.
You can jump full-bore on top of one and, as soon as
the pressure disappears, the dents magically pop out, leaving
the suitcase’s aesthetic appearance unscathed.
Rimowa’s TSA combination locks allow passengers to securely
lock their checked luggage. If the suitcases need to be
unlocked for inspection, US Customs agents use a universal
master key without damage.
In fall 2013, guests gathered for the opening ceremony of
the second facility at Rimowa’s North American production
base — Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. A very conservativelooking
silver-coloured suitcase was unveiled and launched
in grand fashion.

On October 26 and 27, Taste of Life magazine
produced a matchless, by-invitation-only luxury
home event in Vancouver, BC: Build Your
Dream Home. Dozens of the province’s best craftsmen,
designers and materials vendors were hand-picked to
participate and joined forces to create two dazzling, walkthrough
dream homes.
Guests connected with experts stationed throughout the
environs while navigating through the show homes, where
design spirit dazzled from every corner. Pioneering displays
of technology, art, appliances, textiles, construction, finishes
and materials came to life under immense talent. Beauty,
craftsmanship and technology formed captivating unions.
Dream Home One was masterminded
by Eric Lee, Lead Designer of the acclaimed
VictorEric Group. His ambitious
blueprints became reality under the virtuosic
guidance of Greg Nielsen of GD
Nielsen Developments, the prominent
luxury home builder.
The magnificent stone kitchen island, a
custom creation, was extremely complex
to execute because no two of its surfaces
canted at a common angle. In the powder
room, intricate wallpaper juxtaposed with
a ceiling-drop water spout. Guests peered
into the future of home technology at
a TV unobtrusively set inside the mirror;
simple, wall-mounted graphic touch
screens made audio, video, and lighting
control a breeze. Nearby, a wine storage
wall showed visitors how to display their
collection with modern elements like
backlit glass and custom millwork.
Besides experiencing the best in Western
technology and design, invitees also
experienced the ancient tranquility of the
Orient in Dream Home Two as imagined
by Linda Jones, Senior Designer with the
esteemed, fully-integrated firm My House
Design/Build/Team. A stone moongate
rose high above a small bridge and a
stream. Cups of tea beckoned in a bamboo
forest beside the entrance to a master
suite with a peaceful, other-worldly atmosphere.
Nature showed off in fine form
in the ensuite with a giant stone shower
wall, lit from behind and stunning. Window
coverings, lights and more adjusted
the mood at the push of a button. Ink
wash paintings and gold, wooden room
screens offset dark-brown wallcoverings,
reflecting even more Oriental charm.
Attendees also took advantage of mortgage advice
from HSBC, viewed luxury real estate from British Pacific
Properties, and browsed hand-painted decorative
art by Gorman Studios.
Taste of Life magazine is committed to exploring the
essence of East and West and to building a platform
for both cultures to share rich and meaningful lifestyle
ideas. Our team succeeded in bringing BC’s top echelon
of homebuyers and investors, many of them immigrants
from Mainland China, to the event.
Eager to construct their dream homes in picturesque
Vancouver, they faced a plethora of hurdles. After see-

ing the event’s exquisitely-tailored designs and attending
Mandarin-language seminars on real estate, home
construction and investments, they collected invaluable
inspiration, momentum and expert assistance.
The event’s creator, Editor-in-Chief Wendy Guo, was
thrilled to steer the “dream teams” of craftsmen, designers
and suppliers toward an industry-first: a seamless, luxury
experience greater than the sum of its parts. Ultimately,
Canadian luxury home industries rose to new heights.

士 , 差 不 多 被 凍 僵 時 , 一 對 客 家 公 婆 路 過 , 把 我 撿 上 了 車 帶 回
市 區 。 更 載 我 到 他 們 的 家 , 幫 我 烘 乾 褲 腿 , 又 端 上 自 家 熱 呼 呼
的 湯 飯 讓 我 吃 過 才 放 我 走 掉 。 又 要 過 年 了 , 想 為 大 家 推 薦 一
款 飽 含 客 家 人 濃 濃 待 客 之 情 的 特 別 飲 食 —— 擂 茶 , 也 就 是 那

查 了 歷 史 , 原 來 客 家 人 的 祖 先 源 自 於 中 原 , 也 是 漢 族
人 。「 客 家 人 」 這 個 稱 呼 , 追 溯 起 來 , 卻 也 包 涵 著 他 們 代
代 人 的 心 酸 但 又 不 屈 不 撓 地 追 求 美 好 生 活 的 堅 毅 精 神 。

New Year, I waited for a bus more than an hour
in a small town. I was almost frozen when an old
Hakka couple passed by. They took me to their home, let
me dry by their fire and fed me homemade soup. As Chinese
New Year approaches again, make your own “Lei cha”
or “pounded tea,” the soup that amiable pair gifted me on
that memorable night.

遷 , 經 歷 過 多 次 兵 荒 馬 亂 、 顛 沛 流 離 、 南 遷 墾 殖 拓 荒 的 歲
月 , 相 對 於 到 達 地 方 的 原 住 民 , 他 們 就 自 稱 是 「 客 」 了 。
但 客 家 人 勤 勞 和 堅 毅 的 品 格 讓 他 們 扎 根 在 生 活 的 地
方 , 又 堅 持 和 發 揚 著 自 己 族 裔 的 傳 統 和 文 化 。 現 在 世 界 各
國 都 有 客 家 人 的 身 影 , 但 是 「 客 家 人 」 這 個 稱 呼 中 那 絲 絲
心 酸 的 味 道 已 經 淡 得 不 見 了 。
像 我 遇 到 的 這 對 客 家 公 婆 , 退 休 生 活 快 樂 而 富 足 , 兒
女 早 已 各 自 在 加 拿 大 成 家 立 業 。 而 他 們 帶 我 去 那 年 家 裏 的
新 年 聚 會 , 我 驚 訝 地 發 現 了 一 棟 大 大 的 獨 立 屋 中 穿 梭 著 十
幾 位 和 這 對 公 婆 年 紀 相 仿 的 老 人 家 。 一 打 聽 , 原 來 都 是 公
公 的 親 兄 弟 姊 妹 和 他 們 的 另 一 半 。 相 較 之 下 , 我 是 這 個 聚
會 中 唯 一 的 小 朋 友 , 雖 然 是 初 次 見 面 , 熱 情 的 公 公 婆 婆 們
卻 按 著 他 們 過 年 的 習 俗 都 往 我 手 裏 塞 紅 包 。 我 相 信 人 和 人
之 間 的 緣 份 , 卻 也 被 老 人 家 們 的 熱 情 和 不 設 防 感 動 著 。
本 是 要 教 大 家 做 擂 茶 , 卻 打 開 了 記 憶 的 門 , 囉 嗦 了 些
許 往 事 。 也 好 , 可 以 讓 大 家 在 製 作 擂 茶 的 過 程 中 也 帶 著 客
家 人 那 濃 濃 的 待 客 之 情 。
擂 茶 香 濃 好 喝 、 主 要 成 份 綠 茶 可 抗 氧 化 及 保 護 心 血
管 , 花 生 、 芝 麻 、 米 仔 等 乾 果 、 五 穀 類 , 磨 成 粉 末 都 可 加
速 人 體 吸 收 。 習 慣 吃 擂 茶 的 客 家 人 中 , 不 難 發 現 許 多 長 命
百 歲 的 人 瑞 。 冬 天 進 補 , 大 魚 大 肉 後 容 易 造 成 體 質 偏 酸 ,
膽 固 醇 升 高 , 來 一 碗 香 濃 的 熱 擂 茶 來 調 節 清 理 身 體 吧 !
擂 茶 湯 底
主 料 : 綠 茶 葉 ( 生 )300 克 、 花 生 200 克 ( 炒 熟 ),
黑 、 白 芝 麻 ( 生 ) 各 200 克 , 米 仔 ( 玄 米 )100 克
做 法 : 綠 茶 葉 放 進 擂 缽 磨 成 粉 末 後 , 再 加 入 炒 熟 的 花
生 、 玄 米 及 芝 麻 持 續 研 磨 , 擂 好 後 加 開 水 , 湯 底 就 算 完
成 。 湯 底 可 以 單 獨 享 用 。
鹹 味 擂 茶 泡 飯
配 料 : 九 層 塔 100 克 、 香 菜 30 克 , 鹽 ; 薯 仔 菜 、 芥
蘭 、 大 蒜 、 四 季 豆 、 長 豆 、 芹 菜 、 蝦 米 、 炒 肉 、 豆 乾 、
花 生 、 蘿 蔔 乾 ( 菜 脯 ), 以 上 蔬 菜 可 隨 季 節 性 食 材 變 化 搭
配 , 選 五 ~ 七 種 菜 色 搭 配 食 用 。
做 法 : 擂 茶 湯 底 主 料 快 磨 好 時 加 入 九 層 塔 、 香 菜 和 適
量 鹽 , 磨 好 直 接 沖 熱 水 作 成 鹹 味 擂 茶 湯 底 。
食 材 洗 淨 , 將 蔬 菜 、 豆 乾 全 部 切 小 段 或 小 塊 狀 , 熱 油
鍋 , 依 序 爆 香 豆 乾 、 蝦 米 、 蒜 , 蔬 菜 備 用 , 不 要 炒 太 油 。
碗 中 盛 白 飯 或 米 仔 , 鋪 上 炒 好 的 蔬 菜 、 豆 乾 粒 、 蘿 蔔
乾 。 淋 上 剛 沖 泡 的 鹹 味 擂 茶 湯 底 , 擂 茶 泡 飯 就 完 成 了 。
The Hakkas’ ancestors originated from the Central Plain in
China (now Shanxi and Henan Provinces), so although they
live many different places in the world, they are Han people.
Trace the origins of “Hakka” (“guest families”) and you
will find the name witnesses the sorrow of generations of
Hakka, as well as their relentless perseverance in pursuit
of better lives.
Hakkas have survived several large-scale migrations, mostly
caused by wars, since the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC). Despite
many centuries of farming and trailblazing in their new
homelands, the Hakka refer to themselves as “guests.”
The old couple’s Lei cha was aromatic, thick and delicious.
Like all Lei cha, its base was made of green tea leaves which
have antioxidants and offer cardiovascular protection. The
nutrients of green tea and all of Lei cha’s ingredients are
more easily absorbed when ground. In winter, after consuming
a large quantity of meat and fish, it is very easy to end up
with an acidic constitution and an elevated cholesterol level.
Drink a bowl of fragrant hot Lei cha to tonify and clean your
body. There are many Hakka centenarians!
Lei Cha Soup Base
Ingredients: 300g green tea leaves (raw), 200g roasted peanuts,
200g black and 200g white sesame seeds (raw), and
100g roasted (browned) rice.*
Directions: Grind green tea leaves into powder in a mortar
and pestle. Add roasted peanuts, brown rice and sesame
seeds and continue grinding. Add water into ground mixture.
The soup base is now ready and can be served alone as
a beverage by adding hot water.
Savoury Lei Cha Rice Soup
Ingredients: 100g basil, 30g cilantro, some salt; sweet potato
leaves, broccoli, garlic, green beans, Chinese long beans
(long-podded cowpeas), celery stalks, dried peeled shrimp,
sautéd meat, dried tofu, peanuts and dried radish. The mix
of the vegetables can be changed according to the season.

甜 味 擂 茶
配 料 : 雪 蓮 子 、 白 果 、 青 豌 豆 、 蓮 子 、 薏 仁 、 淮 山 、

Directions: When Lei cha soup base ingredients are almost
ground, add basil, cilantro and salt and continue pounding.
Add hot water to turn ground mix into savoury base.
Wash and dice vegetables and dried tofu. Put frying pan on
high heat. Sauté dried tofu, dried peeled shrimp, garlic and
vegetables in sequence. Make sure they are not too oily.
Fill a bowl with rice or brown rice. Cover the rice with
sautéd vegetables, dried tofu and dried radish cubes. Pour
freshly brewed savoury soup base onto rice.
Sweet Lei Cha
Suggested Ingredients may include snow lotus, ginkgo,
lotus, or Gordon Euryale seeds; green peas, Job’s Tears, Chinese
yam; adzuki, rice, jack, mung or scarlet runner beans;
soybeans; black soybeans; millet; wheat or red wheat; barley,
buckwheat, oats or brown rice.
Directions: Sweet ingredients can be used selectively, according
to preferences. Total quantity of sweet ingredients
should not exceed one-third of soup base ingredients’ quantity.
First, roast ingredients. Prepare soup base, add choices
and mix with soup base. Grind mixture into paste. Add
some sugar into mixture. Add hot boiling water into mixture
before serving.
*Roasted rice is made from soaking, cooking, sun-drying and roasting rice grains as a preservation
method. It can be found in a Chinese grocery store.

說 功 效 , 這 裏 倒 有 一 段 典 故 。
歷 史 上 有 座 苦 峪 城 , 位 於 甘 肅 戰 略 要 地 , 兵 家 必 爭 。
相 傳 唐 太 宗 命 名 將 薛 仁 貴 征 西 , 一 路 所 向 披 靡 , 可 在 苦 峪
城 中 了 埋 伏 , 時 值 寒 冬 臘 月 , 雖 然 軍 中 的 開 國 元 勳 程 咬 金
正 殺 開 血 路 前 往 長 安 搬 救 兵 , 但 將 士 們 缺 乏 糧 食 , 掙 扎 在
死 亡 線 上 。 一 名 餓 倒 在 地 的 士 兵 突 然 發 現 有 一 塊 地 方 既 不
積 雪 , 也 不 封 凍 , 他 隨 手 挖 開 , 驚 喜 地 發 現 了 一 個 肥 滿 的

便 , 用 於 骨 蒸 潮 熱 、 腿 膝 痿 弱 、 筋 骨 無 力 、 腸 燥 便 秘 」 的
記 載 。
鎖 陽 又 名 不 老 草 , 自 身 無 根 系 , 寄 生 於 沙 漠 植 物 蒺 藜
科 白 刺 的 根 上 。 這 種 植 物 生 長 於 零 下 20 度 左 右 , 生 長 之 處
不 封 凍 , 落 雪 即 融 。 從 陰 陽 平 衡 的 角 度 可 以 想 像 , 生 存 於
如 此 低 溫 的 環 境 , 那 它 當 然 就 有 天 然 的 儲 存 陽 氣 、 抗 寒 的
能 力 , 因 此 它 的 氣 味 是 甘 溫 , 入 肝 經 和 腎 經 。 它 的 第 一 個
功 效 是 補 腎 助 陽 。 鎖 陽 全 草 質 地 堅 硬 , 故 有 強 筋 壯 骨 的 功

茄 100g 切 塊 , 鹽 和 香 油 適 量 。
作 法 : 將 鎖 陽 洗 淨 切 片 , 直 接 入 鍋 中 煮 , 先 大 火 煮
開 , 後 取 小 火 慢 燉 20 分 鐘 , 然 後 加 入 鮮 貝 、 番 茄 塊 和 黃 瓜
片 再 小 火 燉 5 分 鐘 , 調 入 鹽 和 油 , 即 可 出 鍋 享 用 了 。 此 湯

In winter, vital energy of yang weakens, and yin, cold qi,
becomes dominant. Scallop soup with desert thumb is
an excellent winter tonic to increase internal warmth.
A club-like, flowering stalk also known as Cynomorium
coccineum, desert thumb’s Chinese name, suo yang, means
“locking up all the yang in one’s body.” With no root of its
own, it parasitizes the roots of Nitraria sibirica and grows
in an environment of around 20 degrees Celsius below
zero. There is a Chinese legend about its fame.
Because the ruined, desert city of Suoyang, formerly
Kuyu, in Gansu Province held a strategically important
position, it was often a battleground for opposing military
forces. Emperor Taizong (Tang Dynasty 598 – 649 AD) appointed
the illustrious general Xue Rengui (614 – 683 AD)
to lead an expedition. The Tang swept forward, victory after
victory, until they were besieged at Kuyu in the dead of winter.
Tang soldiers were starving. Legend has it that one, faint
with hunger, saw a snowfree, unfrozen patch of ground and,
digging in, was overjoyed to find a plump, sweet, puckery
root — suo yang. The soldier reported his discovery to Xue
Rengui, who ordered his troops to harvest the bounty. The
spirits of the entire army were lifted, and they persevered in
guarding their fortress until reinforcements arrived and the
Tang overcame the siege. Emperor Taizong renamed the
city Suoyang after the little plant.
According to historical records, when natural disasters
befell, the residents of Suoyang would dig out desert
thumbs, also known as “bulaocao” (“ageless herb”) in
Chinese to survive.
This soup is suitable for long-term winter consumption.
It is helpful for people with chronic lumbago and leg pains,
soreness and weakness of waist and knees, and cold intolerance.
Contraindications: If a person has a red tongue,
thin tongue coating, dry mouth and throat, dysphoria or
night sweats, while experiencing soreness and weakness of
waist and knees, this soup isn’t appropriate.*
Desert Thumb and Scallop Soup
Ingredients: 50g raw scallops, 15g desert thumb slices,
100g cucumber slices, 100g diced tomatoes, salt and sesame
oil to taste
Directions: Wash and slice the desert thumbs and put
them directly in a pot of water to cook. First put the pot on
high heat. Once the water boils, simmer on low heat for 20
minutes. Then add scallops, cucumber slices and tomato
cubes into the pot and simmer on low heat for an additional
5 minutes. Season the soup with salt and sesame oil.
This delicious, fortifying soup is ready to serve.

Room with a view
Relaxation is easy amid the gently rolling hills of the Okanagan
and the views are amazing. Throughout the building,
glass and only a smattering of walls stand between the rolling
countryside and its guests. No walls stand between each
room’s shower, crystal-shaped bathtub or the wide world,
exposing Canadians to the ambivalent European attitude
toward clothing. Although window coverings are provided,
inside, bathers are left to fend (off) for themselves.
Sparkling Hill is a personal project of Mr. Gernot Langes-
Swarovski and is winner of numerous awards since it opened
in 2010. Each room is adorned with a twinkling crystal fireplace
and crystals in the ceiling but, while the sun is out and
the shades open, nothing can outshine the outstanding view.
At night, cascading chandeliers made of thousands of crystals
and just the right amount of suspended and inlaid crystal
installations melt even the gruffest of men who can be overheard
to say “Everywhere you look, it’s so beautiful.”
The heart of the experience is the European-style Kur
Spa. Access to saunas and steam rooms, heated saltwater
pools and a German Kneipp pool is complimentary with
each stay. The Kneipp pool is a circular walkway submerged
knee-deep in water that changes from warm to cool to warm.
Though it doesn’t sound like much, the effects are subtle,
immediate and wonderful: three times around relaxes and
invigorates the whole body.

Catching up to the Europeans
Hydrotherapy and other types of preventative remedies are
just starting to be widely appreciated by North Americans and
Sparkling Hill is paving the way. Part social experience, part
meditation and totally rejuvenating, the Austrian-designed
steam and sauna circuit takes you through nine warm, hot,
cold, steamy and dry environments for 2 to 3 hours of languorous
relaxation per day. Worth the entire trip by itself.
For those who want the authentic exhilaration that comes
with the Northern European tradition of alternating a hot sauna
with a jump in the snow, you’ll find actual fresh snow to rub on
yourself in the Igloo sauna which is a dry 10 degrees Celsius.
European spas function more like clinics and Kur Spa is the
place to go if you seek a comprehensive anti-aging regimen or
a natural program for well-being: acupuncture, homeopathy,
naturopathic medicine, clinical nutrition and more. North
America’s first cryotherapy treatments are found there — three
minutes in a -110 Celsius chamber, which does wonders for
chronic pain sufferers.

Just 1.5 kilometers from Venice, the island of Murano’s
architecture and atmosphere are much the same
as they are in Italy’s famous city by the sea. Behind
the cafés and shops that line the island’s streets, however, are
thousands of artists labouring in a unique tradition.
To watch Murano glassmakers at work is to see art come
to life. Even the most elaborate and colorful sculpture begins
as a glob of molten sand on the end of a blowpipe. With
the precision of a surgical team, the craftsmen twirl, guide,
smooth, and blow the formless mass, feverishly inserting
and removing it from the fire as it takes structure.
Chunks of coloured glass are rolled into the flaming red
ball and melt into it, but the intricate patterns and brilliant
colours seen in the final product are hidden by the heat at
this point. The colours emerge when the temperature cools.
The liquid hardens into a vase, bowl, or sculpture, in one
hour or less. But don’t let that fool you — decades of apprenticeship
and single-minded artistic endeavour lie behind
every piece.
An artistic heritage hundreds of years in the making
There are about 1,000 glass artists working in Murano today.
Given that the island is only about 5.5 square kilometers
with a total population of 5,000, it’s easy to understand
why glassmaking dominates every aspect of the culture.
Only 15 years ago, there were closer to 6,000 working artisans
on the island. But with the encroachment of replicas
from Eastern Europe and Asia, the classic ways have lost
some of their market. Nonetheless, the traditions are alive
and well in studios such as Lino Tagliapietra’s, Gianluca
Vidal’s, Pino Signoretto’s, and many others who learned
from older masters who learned from even older masters,
tracing lineages back 500 years or more.
In medieval times, glass was a luxurious status symbol,
delicate and difficult to make. The Italians advanced
the processes for melting sand, combining it with different
materials like lime and lead to create incredibly clear
glass and revolutionizing the techniques for blowing glass
shapes by using long pipes. By the 1200s, Venice had
made a name for itself. In 1291, the Venetian government

Murano is best as a day trip during a longer stay in Venice.
Take a boat over in the morning, stay through lunch, take

There are a few hotels on the island of Murano, but the

by boat at its faded pastel entrance, you walk inside to an
expanse of old-world marble and hard-wood luxury that
makes you feel like royalty.
Venice and Murano are only accessible by boat, so don’t
worry about transportation. Just fly into Venice airport and
it will be easy to find your way to your hotel. Make your Murano
trip one of the first days of your visit, and don’t let the
hotel or anyone else organize it for you. Just take a taxi yourself
to avoid pushy salespeople.
