RELIEF AND DISASTER PREPAREDNESS<br />

programs for all categories <strong>of</strong> health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

• Set up a disaster response centers and teams<br />

at national, provincial and district levels.<br />

• Coordination between all relief organizations<br />

(including NGOs and governmental<br />

organizations) through coordination centers.<br />

• Senior pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, specially doctors, must<br />

be ready to respond immediately in disaster<br />

situations.<br />

• Extend helping hands, financial and material<br />

resources to other nations and countries when<br />

deemed necessary.<br />

• Some resources must be in reserve for<br />

unforeseen situations and disasters. Every<br />

medical institution and health care unit must<br />

allocate reasonable percentage <strong>of</strong> human and<br />

material resources for this purpose.<br />

• Every doctor must be educated that<br />

humanitarian / relief work is the most<br />

rewarding and noble work one can provide.<br />

• Disaster management system must be<br />

included in the curricula <strong>of</strong> various university<br />

programs especially in every medical and<br />

nursing schools.<br />

• Continuous upgrading <strong>of</strong> disaster<br />

management tools are required through<br />

continuous research and innovations.<br />

• Regular drills are required to be conducted at<br />

all levels. Special efforts are required for<br />

training and regular exercises for medical<br />

relief workers.<br />

• Relief and rescue departments must develop<br />

coordination plans at all levels and with all<br />

sorts <strong>of</strong> relief bodies including NGOs and<br />

public sector organizations.<br />

• All relief activities must be channeled<br />

effectively to reduce the pilferage and loss <strong>of</strong><br />

valuable resources.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> these recommendations have already<br />

been incorporated by National Disaster<br />

Management Coordination Office. Still more<br />

needs to be included and many more needs to be<br />

developed in the future.<br />
