<strong>FIMA</strong> GLOBAL RELIEF<br />
Afghan Relief<br />
2001:<br />
Following the September 11,2001 incident, a<br />
major USA-led western onslaught was waged<br />
against Afghanistan during October 2001, which<br />
resulted in over 12,000 deaths, more than 32,000<br />
individuals with serious injuries and more than<br />
one million displaced Afghanis.<br />
Acute, wide scale influx <strong>of</strong> crouds <strong>of</strong><br />
impoverished Afghani refugees poured into<br />
Pakistan, most <strong>of</strong> whom were locked in border<br />
areas between the two countries. More victims<br />
wandered around with increasing numbers <strong>of</strong><br />
casualties and sick, hungry civilians inside and<br />
outside Afghanistan, a situation that deteriorated<br />
into a major humanitarian disaster.<br />
Since the early days <strong>of</strong> the crisis, <strong>FIMA</strong>, pioneered<br />
by the IMA <strong>of</strong> Pakistan (PIMA), organized a<br />
medical humanitarian campaign. Constructive<br />
collaboration was established among various<br />
IMAs and other <strong>Islamic</strong> relief NGOs, with relief<br />
teams dispatchment, monetary and material<br />
donations. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Hafeez Ur Rahman, <strong>FIMA</strong> Relief<br />
Coordinator, led a Needs Assessment delegation<br />
to the troubled border areas.<br />
PIMA received medical teams at Pakistan airports,<br />
housed them and distributed them to hospitals,<br />
clinics and mobile units functional at the Pakistan-<br />
Afghan border, in refugee camps, or even in<br />
Afghani cities, Kabul, Kandahar, Jalalabad, Spin<br />
Boldak and others, where medical care, surgical<br />
procedures, and medical supplies were provided.<br />
(DWW), Mercy Malaysia and other NGOs, and<br />
established plans for relief work.<br />
PIMA, supported by <strong>FIMA</strong>-member IMAs and<br />
other <strong>Islamic</strong> relief NGOs, established and<br />
operated many medical centers, mobile clinics, in<br />
addition to the hospitals in Quetta, Peshawar and<br />
other cities.<br />
In Chaman, at the Pakistan side <strong>of</strong> borders, PIMA<br />
established a central facility capable <strong>of</strong> hosting<br />
tens <strong>of</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, to facilitate<br />
organized distribution <strong>of</strong> teams, with<br />
communication and transport facilities.<br />
PIMA relief base compound at Chaman (one km<br />
from the border), included well organized teams <strong>of</strong><br />
(25-30) doctors/paramedics, a large warehouse for<br />
medical supplies and 3 ambulances. A new basic<br />
hospital capable <strong>of</strong> performing emergency<br />
surgeries was established.<br />
In Spin Boldak, another border town, Drs Tanveer<br />
Zubairi, Ata Ur Rehman, Arshad Waheed and<br />
Sakib Ansari spearheaded an early assessment<br />
task, with participants from Doctors World Wide<br />
PIMA and other <strong>FIMA</strong> collaborating NGOs at the Pakistan-<br />
Afghan borders<br />
