<strong>FIMA</strong> GLOBAL RELIEF<br />
Bangladesh Floods:<br />
Cyclone CIDER<br />
2007:<br />
On November 15,2007, Cyclone CIDER, a<br />
category five tropical cyclone, struck Bangladesh<br />
mainland, causing extensive flooding and<br />
destruction 16 .<br />
As per Red Crescent, 10,000 people lost their<br />
lives, and more than three million lost their homes<br />
and livestock. Crops were destroyed and trees<br />
were uprooted.<br />
The most affected districts were Morolgonj and<br />
Sharankhola. A massive disaster situation emerged<br />
with urgent humanitarian needs for food items,<br />
drinking water, shelters, medical teams and<br />
supplies.<br />

The local <strong>FIMA</strong> member, Bangladesh National<br />
Doctors Forum (BNDF) and SAWAB<br />
organization, started relief work, in collaboration<br />
with Muslim Aid-UK, and notified <strong>FIMA</strong> relief<br />
coordinator for urgent relief needs.<br />

information relief reports to <strong>FIMA</strong> coordinator<br />
and to member organizations.<br />
Donations came from Hayat-Turkey, IMASA,<br />
IMAKSA, PIMA and IMA-Jordan.<br />
On December 15-18,2007, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Mohammad Iqbal<br />
Khan (PIMA Relief) with the directorinternational<br />
affairs-al-Khidmat Foundation, came<br />
to the Cyclone-hit area, witnessed the grave<br />
situation with near complete lack <strong>of</strong> health care<br />
facilities.<br />
PIMA donated 2 ambulances to Bangladesh<br />
IMA/SAWAB, to serve coastal districts <strong>of</strong><br />
Borguna and Patuakhalr, and to transport poor<br />
patients to hospitals.<br />

Gaza Crisis:<br />
2008:<br />
The world witnessed one <strong>of</strong> its worst humanitarian<br />
crisis on December 27, 2008, when Israeli war<br />
machine bombarded the helpless population <strong>of</strong><br />
Gaza, Palestine. Israel mounted unrelenting air,<br />
land and sea attacks, killing over 1,400 people,<br />
many <strong>of</strong> whom were women and children. More<br />
than 10,000 were injured, some <strong>of</strong> them seriously.<br />
Hundreds <strong>of</strong> thousands lost homes and became<br />
IDPs 17 .<br />
