Prevention <strong>of</strong> Blindness Trust (POB) - <strong>FIMA</strong><br />

Save Vision in Pakistan:<br />

Prevention <strong>of</strong> Blindness Trust (POB) was<br />

established by the Pakistan <strong>Islamic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><br />

Association (PIMA) in 2005, and <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />

registered in 2007, with main objectives parallel to<br />

those <strong>of</strong> <strong>FIMA</strong> Save Vision.<br />

Leaders <strong>of</strong> this project have been the main<br />

activists and pioneers <strong>of</strong> <strong>FIMA</strong> Save Vision<br />

Program. The thrust <strong>of</strong> POB has been mainly in<br />

Pakistan, including camps <strong>of</strong> Afghan refugees and<br />

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) <strong>of</strong><br />

earthquakes, floods and hostilities. POB consist <strong>of</strong><br />

nine-member board <strong>of</strong> trustees, having vast<br />

experiences and enthusiasm in medical relief,<br />

nationally and internationally. It’s current<br />

chairman is Dr. Intzar Hussein Butt, senior<br />

ophthalmologist in The Services Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> Sciences (SIMS)-Lahore, and leader <strong>of</strong><br />

many <strong>FIMA</strong> Save Vision camps, and training<br />

activities in Asia and Africa. More than 200<br />

highly qualified ophthalmologists from different<br />

distinguished pr<strong>of</strong>essional and training institutions<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pakistan are committed to voluntary relief<br />

work, within the folds <strong>of</strong> POB and <strong>FIMA</strong> Save<br />

Vision activities for the achievement <strong>of</strong> excellence<br />

in eye care, education and research for the welfare<br />

<strong>of</strong> humanity, regardless <strong>of</strong> ethnicity, faith,<br />

nationality or color.<br />

Since its inception, POB has provided care for<br />

about 3 million outpatients, and performed more<br />

than 25 thousand, eye surgeries, mainly cataract<br />

with IOL implantations. POB has arranged for<br />

more than 270 free eye camps in 40 districts <strong>of</strong><br />

Pakistan, and has deployed experienced<br />

ophthalmologists and paramedics, under umbrella<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>FIMA</strong> Save Vision, to 12 African and Asian<br />

countries with deficient eye care facilities and eye<br />

care manpower.<br />

During Pakistan earthquakes in 2005 and 2008,<br />

internally IDPs in 2009, and the Monsoon <strong>2010</strong><br />

floods, POB took the lead in provision <strong>of</strong> eye care,<br />

and thousands <strong>of</strong> eye surgeries, as well as<br />

participation in general relief activities.<br />

The following are projects implemented or<br />

planned by POB in Pakistan:<br />

• <strong>2010</strong>: A special eye care project for timely<br />

identification and diagnosis <strong>of</strong> visual<br />

impairments in childhood.<br />

• Eye care for prison inmates. 8000<br />

individuals examined, 45 eye surgeries<br />

performed, and eye glasses distributed.<br />

• A blind rehabilitation project has been<br />

initiated to help building the talents <strong>of</strong><br />

blind individuals, including computer<br />

training workshops. Hundred free white<br />

canes were distributed.<br />
