<strong>FIMA</strong> EYE HOSPITALS<br />

<strong>FIMA</strong> was to delegate volunteer eye surgeons and<br />

teams from time to time to augment the drive for<br />

reduction <strong>of</strong> this extensive backlog <strong>of</strong> visually<br />

impaired people. <strong>FIMA</strong> was to provide training <strong>of</strong><br />

local Sudanese pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, and to provides<br />

ophthalmology equipment; instruments, and<br />

consumables including the special eye lenses, as<br />

well as medications. Surgical equipments were<br />

lifted by <strong>FIMA</strong> to this hospital in early 2006 at a<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> over USD 100,000.<br />

• WHO-EMRO would support the Sudanese<br />

health authorities in providing incentive<br />

remuneration, for one year, <strong>of</strong> one Sudanese<br />

eye specialist to be deployed from Khartoum<br />

on full-time basis at al-Genaina Hospital.<br />

WHO-EMRO would also help <strong>FIMA</strong> in provision<br />

<strong>of</strong> some consumables and medications:<br />

The selected Sudanese eye surgeon was sent to<br />

Pakistan for further specialized training in<br />

ophthalmology, sponsored by IMA <strong>of</strong> Pakistan<br />

(<strong>FIMA</strong> member).<br />

The hospital was <strong>of</strong>ficially opened on February<br />

27, 2006, and has been fully functional since then,<br />

as a symbol <strong>of</strong> successful and harmonious<br />

collaboration, in good faith, between the above<br />

bodies.<br />

In 2008, a small building extension was added to<br />

the hospital, which now includes:<br />

• The operating section:<br />

o One room for major operations.<br />

o One room for minor operations.<br />

o Sterilization room.<br />

o Nurses’ room.<br />

o Supplies’ room.<br />

• Doctor’s <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

• In-patient six-beds male room, another sixbeds<br />

female room, one isolation room, and<br />

nurses’ room.<br />

• The new extension includes:<br />

o Two examination rooms.<br />

o One vision examination room.<br />

o <strong>Medical</strong> records room.<br />

This hospital was well equipped with various<br />

instruments and consumables to function as an<br />

independent eye care facility.<br />

In the latest operational report, the following<br />

achievements were accomplished by the <strong>FIMA</strong><br />

Eye Hospital at al-Genaina:<br />

• Cataract surgeries from 2006-2009: 4000<br />

• Cataract surgeries in <strong>2010</strong>: 420<br />

• Cataract surgeries in the first 6 months <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>2011</strong>: 620<br />
