<strong>FIMA</strong> EYE HOSPITALS<br />

• Several eye camps have been conducted in<br />

the hospital, and 800 surgeries performed<br />

• Total Surgeries: 5,840<br />

• Number <strong>of</strong> out-patients treated in hospital<br />

clinics: approximately50,000<br />

Patients seeking eye care in the hospital come<br />

from West Darfur and from regions extending all<br />

the way to tribes <strong>of</strong> the neighboring Republic <strong>of</strong><br />

Chad.<br />

Eye Hospital at al-Qadarif- Sudan:<br />

Al-Gadarif is a far eastern Sudanese province.<br />

Needs assessment conducted by the IMA <strong>of</strong> Sudan<br />

and Sudanese health authorities revealed<br />

tremendous need for an eye hospital, similar in<br />

magnitude to that <strong>of</strong> West Darfur.<br />

Preliminary preparations, including architectural<br />

drawings were prepared. The project is waiting<br />

collaborative efforts to be executed.<br />

Eye Health Care in Putlam, Sri Lanka:<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Hafeez Ur Rahman, coordinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>FIMA</strong><br />

Save Vision Program, was invited to visit Sri<br />

Lanka in 2008, by the Sarandeeb Foundation.<br />

Putlam is a city with 50,000 people, with nearby<br />

refugee camps, at that time, <strong>of</strong> about 100,000<br />

people, mostly Muslims.<br />

Sarandeeb Foundation runs a small hospital <strong>of</strong> 50<br />

beds, established by Zakat House in Kuwait in a<br />

suburb <strong>of</strong> Putlam.<br />

<strong>FIMA</strong> Eye Center in Kuwait Hospital-<br />

Peshawar- Pakistan:<br />

This general hospital was established by the Red<br />

Crescent Society <strong>of</strong> Kuwait, more than thirty years<br />

ago, for medical care <strong>of</strong> Afghan refugees, on free<br />

or minimal charge basis. Subsequently, Peshawar<br />

<strong>Medical</strong> College (PMC) opened the hospital for<br />

the general public.<br />

In January 2008, <strong>FIMA</strong> developed the eye<br />

department at this hospital, provided eye surgery<br />

consumables and IOLs, and started free cataract<br />

surgeries for needy Afghan refugees and local<br />

population. To date, more than 1000 cataract<br />

surgeries have been performed. The hospital is<br />

currently one <strong>of</strong> the training hospitals <strong>of</strong> PMC.<br />

In April 2008, <strong>FIMA</strong> conducted an eye camp in<br />

this Kuwait Hospital and performed 750 eye<br />

surgeries. <strong>FIMA</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered to establish an eye<br />

department in the hospital. An agreement was<br />

established, and the department became wellequipped<br />

and functional in May 2008. An eye<br />

surgeon from Colombo, the capital city, started<br />

visiting the hospital once a week to perform eye<br />

surgeries.<br />

Other NGOs conducted free eye camps in the new<br />

eye department. As <strong>of</strong> July <strong>2011</strong>, 7478 cataract<br />

surgeries were conducted, in collaboration with<br />

other NGOs.<br />

Eye Hospitals in Palestine:<br />

As stated earlier, WHO-EMRO statistics classified<br />

Palestine as one <strong>of</strong> 7 most needy countries for eye<br />

care in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with<br />

extensive deficiencies in dealing with visual<br />

impairments.<br />
