SAVE VISION<br />

• Training workshops/seminars for eye-care<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional: More than 15 in and outside<br />

Pakistan, and more than 300 eye care<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals trained.<br />

• Community eye care centers in different<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> Pakistan have been initiated.<br />

• Eye awareness programs have been<br />

conducted in several areas <strong>of</strong> Pakistan.<br />

This public educational activity has been<br />

expanded by establishing a POB websites<br />

(www.pobtrust.org) which is being<br />

updated regularly.<br />

• A future plan: Establishment <strong>of</strong> a tertiary<br />

eye care institute in Lahore-Pakistan.<br />

Other Program Outcomes:<br />

• Establishment <strong>of</strong> Eye-Care Centers: This<br />

activity has been addressed by two<br />

manuscripts in this issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>Year</strong> <strong>Book</strong>.<br />

• Training-capacity Building: In almost all<br />

eye camps, <strong>FIMA</strong> teams adopted programs<br />

<strong>of</strong> practical training <strong>of</strong> local<br />

ophthalmologists, nurses and other<br />

paramedical pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, to improve<br />

sustainability <strong>of</strong> eye care by qualified local<br />

hands. Training has been also conducted in<br />

Pakistani and Jordanian ophthalmology<br />

centers.<br />

• Training workshops in Gusan and Katsina-<br />

Nigeria, June 14-15,2008, conducted<br />

separately by senior Pakistani<br />

ophthalmologists, one for 12 local eyedoctors<br />

and the second for 40 nursesparamedics.<br />

• Training workshop in Lagos-Nigeria, June<br />

22-24 2008, conducted separately for 13<br />

Nigerian eye doctors, and for 35 Nigerian<br />

paramedics.<br />

• Training workshop in Maiduguri-Nigeria,<br />

January 4-9,2009: for 25 local eye doctors.<br />

The program included a special session on<br />

“small Incision Cataract Surgery-SICS”. A<br />

parallel training session was also<br />

conducted for 10 ophthalmic nurses and<br />

OR technicians. Trainers were senior<br />

ophthalmologists and OT from Pakistan.<br />

• Keratoplasty surgery (Corneal<br />

transplantation), in Khartoum-Sudan,<br />

January-February 2009. 25 corneas were<br />

imported from Sri Lanka, through a MOU.<br />

Trainers were Senior ophthalmologists<br />

from Pakistan.<br />

<strong>FIMA</strong> SAVE VISION- Specialized training<br />

courses:<br />

• Advanced capacity building for eye<br />

surgeons from several countries in special<br />

training centers in Pakistan.<br />

• Oculoplastic Workshop, in Khartoum-<br />

Sudan, August 2006. In collaboration with<br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health (MOH)-Sudan.<br />

Conducted by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Imran Sahaf, Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Ophthalmology-Lahore<br />

General Hospital- Postgraduate <strong>Medical</strong><br />

Institute.<br />

The workshop included presentations, interactive<br />

sessions, hands-on training for 52 Sudanese eye<br />

surgeons.<br />
