1.3 Damage to Airplane<br />

The airplane was destroyed by impact forces and a postcrash fire.<br />

1.4 Other Damage<br />

In the immediate vicinity of the impact area, four homes were destroyed, three<br />

homes received substantial damage, and three homes received minor damage. In addition,<br />

the in-flight separation of the engines resulted in property damage where the engines came<br />

to rest. A gas station received minor damage as a result of the impact of the left engine,<br />

and a home and a boat (parked in the driveway) received severe damage as a result of the<br />

impact of the right engine.<br />

1.5 Personnel Information<br />

1.5.1 The Captain<br />

The captain, age 42, was hired by American Airlines in July 1985. He held an<br />

airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate and a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)<br />

first-class medical certificate dated June 5, 2001, with no limitations. The captain received<br />

a type rating on the A300 23 in September 1988 while serving as a first officer 24 and<br />

second-in-command can act as a pilot-in-command during the en route portion of the flight if the pilot holds<br />

second-in-command, and is qualified as pilot-in-command of that aircraft during the en route cruise portion<br />

of the flight.
