3 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The results for the quantities of computer waste generated from 2005 to 2009 and
predictions of quantities to be generated in the following years are presented in
chapter 3.1. The two following chapters (3.2 and 3.3) describe the main findings of
the field survey useful as input for the MFA presented in chapter 3.4. Finally, chapter
3.5 presents some alternatives for the inclusion of the IS.
3.1 Computer waste generation
The annual e-waste generation differentiated between CPUs, laptops, CRT-monitors,
and LCD-monitors as calculated for the middle scenario is depicted in Figure 6 (in
units) and Figure 7 (in tons). In addition to that, the totals obtained with the lower and
higher scenarios are also illustrated in these charts. When comparing units and
weight graphs, one can perceive a higher growth in number of devices compared to
the growth in weight. The differences between the trend in number of devices and
weight are basically due to the fact that new technologies such as laptops and LCDscreens
are lighter than CPUs and CRT-monitors.
