ευαισθησία για την διάγνωση του καρκίνου παχέος<br />

εντέρου με συχνά παθολογικές τιμές σε καλοήθεις<br />

παθήσεις και αρνητικά αποτελέσματα σε αρχόμενη<br />

νόσο. Για το λόγο αυτό η American Society of Clinical<br />

Oncology (ASCO) (38,39) και European Group on Tumor<br />

Markers συνιστά να μη χρησιμοποιείται κάποιος καρκινικός<br />

δείκτης για το έλεγχο ασυμπτωματικών ασθενών<br />

για ΚΠΕ. Φαίνεται ωστόσο ότι τουλάχιστον το CEA έχει<br />

προγνωστική αξία, αφού οι ασθενείς με παθολογική<br />

τιμή έχουν χειρότερη πρόγνωση σε σχέση με ασθενείς<br />

με ίδιο στάδιο νόσο και φυσιολογικό CEA. Βεβαίως η<br />

παραμονή υψηλής τιμής μετεγχειρητικά ή η εκ νέου<br />

αύξηση αυτής κατά την παρακολούθηση είναι δείκτης<br />

υπολειμματικής ή υποτροπής νόσου, αντίστοιχα.<br />
