employable age (between the age of 15 and 65) was 2 Million, but this number had sunk to 1.87 Million
by the year of 2000. It was 67.7% of the population in 1987, and 69.6% in 2000. The reason of this
increase is the sinking number of the population under 15 years.
The number of employees was 1.577.400 in 1987, which was 18.4% of the employees of the German
Democratic Republic (DDR). Comparing these figures to the population it turns out, that the
employment rate was 52.1 % in 1987.
The unemployment is a central problem in Sachsen-Anhalt. There are differences between the northern
and southern part of the state and between the eastern and western part of the state, and there is also
a central-peripheral development line. The unemployment rate was the highest in Aschersleben (25,3%)
and in Hettstedt (26,5%) in 2000. In the areas, which are densely populated, the unemployment rate is
lower. The economically active population is migrating to the densely populated areas, so the number of
the employees is increasing there. 11

In the last years the unemployment rate has fallen sharply in Saxony-Anhalt. The good cyclical situation
of the economy contributed to this between 2005 and 2008.
In November 2010 the unemployment rate was 10,8 %. 13
