First step: Each vision must be first interpreted by the information and interpretation given in the vision itself, before we go to another chapter in the book of Daniel to find some other light there. Second step: We have to ask what the following vision and its interpretation say about the subject in the chapter before and what help do we get from there to better understand this subject? That’s what we as Adventists normally do when we talk about the 4 empires and the papacy in Daniel 2,7,8, and 11. We explain Daniel 2 more extensive by the additional information in Daniel ch.7, ch. 8 and even ch. 11. This same process we also should pursue when the vision comes up to the theme of judgment and the sanctuary and its cleansing in chapter 8. We should expect that also for the question of the sanctuary we ought to get more light in the following chapters of the book of Daniel. Third step: We go now further for looking in other passages of the bible in order to see, how our findings and interpretations of the vision in Daniel can be confirmed by other writers of the bible, who are talking on the same subject or the same historical event of the vision. 3. Since the book of Revelation is considered by Adventists as the unfolding or interpreting part of the book of Daniel, we should also get clear confirmation from there, in what we have found in Daniel and other books of the bible. This should be the way, which we want to proceed in our study of the above mentioned portions of Daniel ch. 8, ch. 11, and ch.12. Concluding observation Before we get into a deeper study of these three passages in the book of Daniel, let me come up to the following observation about these principles that we just tried to look at. If the principles of interpretations, which I have just proposed, and on which we sure all agree, are right, and also applicable as a correct method of interpretation of the visions of Daniel, then we should absolutely expect to find some good material in the chapters after chapter 8, to be able to better interpret the vision in chapter 8. This material must therefore enable us, to give a good biblical interpretation for the theme of the cleansing of the sanctuary. I think personally, that it would not be the right way to read in Daniel 8, 14 about the purifying or justification of the sanctuary and then go right away to Leviticus 16 and look there, how this chapter can help us to solve the problem. We first should examine other passages in the same chapter, to look for a first interpretation, which normally always follows the visions in Daniel. Then we should look in the next chapters 9, 10, 11 and 12. Our own hermeneutical method of interpretation tells us that we should first take a good look in the book of Daniel itself, before we go elsewhere in the bible to find an explanation. Personally I find that in all our studies on this question we didn’t really go this way very consequently, especially when we deal with the sanctuary-theme in the book of Daniel. I looked up different comments and I didn’t find one who tried to go this way in connection with the question of the cleansing of the sanctuary. We sure do it, when we deal with the four empires and the Papacy, but not in connection with the defilement and the purification of the sanctuary. It seems that generally Adventist interpreters do not see the theme of the cleansing of the sanctuary in Daniel 11 and 12. We do see a certain connection between Daniel 8 , 9 and 12, as far as the timecalculation is concerned, as we will see further on. But we do not see yet a connection to the theme of the defilement and the purification of the sanctuary in these chapters after ch. 8, though we should expect it. Sometimes we do not even go to the end of the book of Daniel concerning the explication of the time. The farthest some of our interpreters go is Daniel 9, 24-27 concerning the time-calculation, but they do not look any farther in the book to find still some important information about the end of this time-span of 2300 days. We should even expect that the most important for a good interpretation comes probably at the end! That would probably be the extremes of a chiastic structure and not the center. However, in my personal study of this question I came to the conclusion, that there are some good points in Daniel 11 and 12, which we could bring in connection with our view of the desecration and the cleansing of the sanctuary.
