• <strong>The</strong> consequence <strong>of</strong> a false underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> being Christ’s vicar on earth<br />

It is worth to think about <strong>the</strong> reason behind, why <strong>the</strong> papacy finally acted more <strong>and</strong> more as a kind <strong>of</strong><br />

represent<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>of</strong> Jesus on earth. This misuse was brought up to a gre<strong>at</strong> extend by a false interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

Mt.16, 16, where Jesus seemed to put <strong>the</strong> key <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> God in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Peter. So <strong>the</strong> pope was<br />

claiming by this way to have authority also over <strong>the</strong> earthly kingdoms, so th<strong>at</strong> even <strong>the</strong> kings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth<br />

are to be under his spiritual authority <strong>and</strong> dominion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> consequences <strong>of</strong> this rebellious action where seen in <strong>the</strong> medial church, when <strong>the</strong> papacy brought war<br />

against all those, who where not ready to accept its claims as represent<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Christ on earth.<br />

All this was <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> prophecy in Daniel 8, 11-13, <strong>and</strong> it is <strong>the</strong> same in Dan. 11, 31.<br />

It has in this context clearly to do with a certain desecr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> pollution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sanctuary.<br />

This again shows us th<strong>at</strong> Daniel 11,31-35 must be seen in <strong>the</strong> same context, <strong>and</strong> as a additional inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>and</strong> interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Daniel 8, 11-14, though <strong>the</strong> power th<strong>at</strong> are involved in Daniel 11 is not <strong>the</strong> “little<br />

horn”, but <strong>the</strong> “king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north”, which in this context clear comes out as <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> papacy!<br />

But was <strong>the</strong> papacy always alone in his action against Gods work on this earth? <strong>The</strong> prophecy clearly talks<br />

about helpers for <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> helpers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north<br />

“And arms shall st<strong>and</strong> on his part, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y shall pollute <strong>the</strong> sanctuary.”<br />

Here we have to read very carefully. <strong>The</strong> text does not say th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north alone will pollute <strong>the</strong><br />

sanctuary, but arms will st<strong>and</strong> on his part to help him in this objective! <strong>The</strong>y also shall be involved in<br />

setting up <strong>the</strong> abomin<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> makes desol<strong>at</strong>e!<br />

<strong>The</strong> king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north is <strong>the</strong>refore helped by “arms” (v. 31a). Th<strong>at</strong> is to say, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north will<br />

not be alone in his actions <strong>of</strong> polluting, or in pr<strong>of</strong>aning, <strong>and</strong> devasting <strong>the</strong> sanctuary!<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> does th<strong>at</strong> mean in rel<strong>at</strong>ion to wh<strong>at</strong> we would find in Daniel 8 ? I think, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> word “arms” is a very<br />

striking parallel to <strong>the</strong> “host” in Daniel 8, 12, th<strong>at</strong> are also be given <strong>the</strong>re as a help to <strong>the</strong> little horn in his<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>aning actions in, <strong>and</strong> against <strong>the</strong> sanctuary! So according to this text, <strong>the</strong>re will be two powers who<br />

will be united in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>aning actions th<strong>at</strong> are described in Daniel 11, 31, <strong>and</strong> even to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

chapter. It is <strong>the</strong> “host”, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> “little horn” !<br />

This interpret<strong>at</strong>ion could also get a textual support from Daniel 8,24.<br />

“strong, but not by his own power”<br />

In Dan. 8, 24, which is <strong>the</strong> first interpret<strong>at</strong>ion-part <strong>of</strong> Daniel 8,10-14, it says: “he will be strong, but not by<br />

his own power”! Does it mean, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> little horn will get <strong>the</strong> power from somebody else, as we usually<br />

interpret, in referring to Rev. 13,2, where <strong>the</strong> beast receives <strong>the</strong> power from <strong>the</strong> dragon. Or could it be, th<strong>at</strong><br />

Daniel wants to tell us, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> little horn will not be able to act by himself, but also by those how help<br />

him, <strong>and</strong> who are willing to accept his power?<br />
