• The consequence of a false understanding of being Christ’s vicar on earth
It is worth to think about the reason behind, why the papacy finally acted more and more as a kind of
representative of Jesus on earth. This misuse was brought up to a great extend by a false interpretation of
Mt.16, 16, where Jesus seemed to put the key of the kingdom of God in the hand of Peter. So the pope was
claiming by this way to have authority also over the earthly kingdoms, so that even the kings of the earth
are to be under his spiritual authority and dominion.
The consequences of this rebellious action where seen in the medial church, when the papacy brought war
against all those, who where not ready to accept its claims as representation of Christ on earth.
All this was the object of prophecy in Daniel 8, 11-13, and it is the same in Dan. 11, 31.
It has in this context clearly to do with a certain desecration and pollution of the sanctuary.
This again shows us that Daniel 11,31-35 must be seen in the same context, and as a additional information
and interpretation of Daniel 8, 11-14, though the power that are involved in Daniel 11 is not the “little
horn”, but the “king of the north”, which in this context clear comes out as the power of papacy!
But was the papacy always alone in his action against Gods work on this earth? The prophecy clearly talks
about helpers for the king of the north.
• The helpers of the king of the north
“And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary.”
Here we have to read very carefully. The text does not say that the king of the north alone will pollute the
sanctuary, but arms will stand on his part to help him in this objective! They also shall be involved in
setting up the abomination that makes desolate!
The king of the north is therefore helped by “arms” (v. 31a). That is to say, that the king of the north will
not be alone in his actions of polluting, or in profaning, and devasting the sanctuary!
What does that mean in relation to what we would find in Daniel 8 ? I think, that the word “arms” is a very
striking parallel to the “host” in Daniel 8, 12, that are also be given there as a help to the little horn in his
profaning actions in, and against the sanctuary! So according to this text, there will be two powers who
will be united in the profaning actions that are described in Daniel 11, 31, and even to the end of the
chapter. It is the “host”, and the “little horn” !
This interpretation could also get a textual support from Daniel 8,24.
“strong, but not by his own power”
In Dan. 8, 24, which is the first interpretation-part of Daniel 8,10-14, it says: “he will be strong, but not by
his own power”! Does it mean, that the little horn will get the power from somebody else, as we usually
interpret, in referring to Rev. 13,2, where the beast receives the power from the dragon. Or could it be, that
Daniel wants to tell us, that the little horn will not be able to act by himself, but also by those how help
him, and who are willing to accept his power?
