In preparing this subject, I found out that there is practical no Adventist commentary that has ever brought this above mentioned three passages in the book of Daniel in connection to each other. There are some connections that some make, but they deal in general just with the question of the time in the vision or with the subject of the end. I will mention them as I come to these points within the study. All non-Adventist commentaries are not very helpfully in this question, because they all bring the passages in connection with the story of Antiochus Epiphanes. So this paper will have but few references to other writers, because there is no valuable material on the subject. I will not have the time to do a very deep study on this issue at this moment, and I sure do not claim infallibility in treating this subject, but I do hope though that it could be at least an impulse for further and deeper studies on these questions. Personally I’m convinced that the interconnection of these three passages in the book of Daniel have not yet been shown as it should have probably been done within Adventists. It is not the intention of this paper to discuss too much the identification of the “little horn” nor whether the little horn in Daniel 8,11-14 represents the papacy or not. A lot of other books and studies have been published on this issue, so we don’t have to discuss it here. If not otherwise indicated I will follow in this study the KJV 1986. All underlining and accentuating in quotations are made by the author of this paper and should help to see the point that I will make. As we enter now in our study of this question let’s see first, why we should even expect a clear relationship between certain parts of the visions in Daniel chapter 8, ch. 11, and ch.12. Principles of interpretation of the four visions in the book of Daniel As Adventists we generally agree that we should follow at least three clear principles of interpretation for the right understanding of the visions in the book of Daniel. 1. All four visions of world’s past, present, and future history, which we find in Dan. 2,7,8 and 11 are talking of the same empires. We just have to know that Dan. 2 and 7 start with the empire of Babylon while Dan. 8, and 11 start with Medo-Persia. 2. In three of the four visions (Dan. 2,7, and 8) we can see that in each chapter the vision is first described. Right afterwards follows the interpretation of the vision, which is given to the prophet. Examples: Describing of the vision Interpretation of the vision Daniel 2, 31-35 Daniel 2, 36-45 Daniel 7,1-15 Daniel 7, 17-27 Daniel 8,1-14 Daniel 8, 17-26 Concerning Daniel 11 we could say that the whole vision is already explicative. 3. Each following vision in the book of Daniel gives more details and information in some aspects to the preceding visions. These details are given to better understand and to extend the former visions. They also help to get a clearer and broader picture about what is still to be expected to happen in earthly or in heavenly history. 4. Each following vision in the book of Daniel reveals more and more details especially on end time events and the spiritual powers, which are to fight against God, his people, his sanctuary, and his truth. With the beginning of chapter 7, where the theme of judgment comes in, we also get in each following chapter more and additional information and explanations about the judgment to take place before the end. These four principles bring us to three other major principles of interpretation of the book of Daniel. 1. If each following vision in the book of Daniel brings us additional light to the preceding one, then the following visions can also be seen as a help in interpreting the preceding vision and must therefore be used as such. 2.
