The translation-problem in Dan. 8, 11-12 - Who is “he”, or “it” ? We have realized a longtime ago, that there is a certain problem in the translation of Dan. 8,10 -13. A lot of discussions have taken place, a lot of books and papers are written about the question concerning the relation of the verbs to the different subjects. (Prince, horn or host) The other problem is about the gender of the verbs that does not seem in accordance with the different subjects in the passage. Personally it seems to me, that we meet in this text a certain situation of language that will not be so easy resolved grammatically or by syntax. I think that in some cases in the Bible we are not able to come to a good explication just by technical procedure. In such cases we would probably have to decide by the whole context of the theme of the prophecy, in order to find the good solution for a right translation. So from the view that we have found in Daniel 11, 30-32, I would suggest, that the subject in Dan. 8, 12, to which belongs the feminine verbs “tinnaten” is not anymore the little “horn” (qeren), but the “host” (zavah). • Logically, but not grammatically I think, that we have to consider, that the horn is not explicitly mentioned in v.12, but the reader of the whole passage may have the impression that the little horn is the predominating and logical acting power and therefore also the subject to the verbs in the text. It can be the same problem as we meet in Dan. 8, 9, where the grammar tells us, that the little horn does not come out from the four horns but from the four winds. But that is not the logical, but the grammatical reading. This is a reflection that seems to get good support by a new linguistical study of this text by Martin Pröpstle 8 The problem to understand the text in the right way could be that it goes against our prepositional sight of this prophetic text. But if this danger exists, then we should just try to understand, what the prophet real saw, and not what our logic says. That’s why we have always to be aware, not to read the bible by our human logic, because God often surprises us by actions and developments in the description of prophetic visions that we would not think of. So he also does in real history. He surprises man in His thinking and often He comes quite across to plans and expectations of men. However a good grammatical understanding of this passage, as Martin Pröpstle obviously did, seems that we could read the text in a way that it gets in good accordance with the conclusion that I tried to point out from the view of Dan. 11, 31. If we consider that this is the interpreting part for Dan. 8, 11-13, then we should expect that it brings as to this reading of the text. Conclusion 8 This thesis would be in great agreement with a special study that a good friend of mine, Martin Pröpstle, is working on for his dissertation. Just as I had almost finished this paper, it was to my greatest surprise, that Martin Pröpstle in his proposal for his dissertation exactly came by a deep analyzing study of this passage to this same conclusion. (We never talked each other about that before. I just knew that he was working on this passage.) M. Pröpstle says, that the little horn would eventually be the logical subject of “tinnaten”, but the “host” (zavah) would be the grammatical subject! In summarizing I would therefore agree with M. Pröpstle that the grammatical subject of the following verbs in v. 12 are the “host”, but the logical subject would still be the “horn”. But if we think still deeper, then we could even say that we could see both, the host” and the “horn”, as belonging to all following verbs in the text! By that I do not mean that it only concerns the verb “tinnaten” (was given), but also “tashlech” (cast down the truth), and also the two following verb “w’astha” and “w’hizli’chah” ! (it practised and prospered) That is to say, that everything that now is going on in the text could be seen from this point of view. In this case not only the little horn but also his “host” would logically be engaged in the battle against the sanctuary and the people. Could it be, that this has to do something with the background of the two powers, of whom we were talking above, and who according to Dan. 11,31 became a united power? So in Dan. 8, 12 we could eventually find the same idea, as we already saw in the interpreting part in Dan. 11.31. We even should expect it like that! So therefore the use of the verbs in the singular form would be the logic way to describe the “Unity” between the king of the north, and the arms that stood at his side.
