<strong>The</strong> <strong>Leverage</strong> <strong>Effect</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Photonics</strong> <strong>Technologies</strong>: <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Perspective</strong><br />
Food & beverage as well as textiles & clothing will experience a significant<br />
increase in impact, especially because <strong>of</strong> flexible displays used in<br />
packaging and materials. <strong>The</strong> fact that media production & broadcasting<br />
shows little change in dependency must not be seen as indicating<br />
limited change. As dependency is already almost at its peak, dependency<br />
will stay strong, but <strong>the</strong> technology creating this dependency may<br />
change rapidly. Touch screens, <strong>the</strong> tablets/e-readers and o<strong>the</strong>r new devices<br />
will keep on changing this industry.<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>r changes can be seen in <strong>the</strong> final markets illustrated in Figure 1.<br />
As a high diversity <strong>of</strong> types <strong>of</strong> displays is mostly used in <strong>the</strong>se final markets,<br />
<strong>the</strong> dependency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se markets shows more future changes. An<br />
increase in dependency is to be expected in Retail & services, as communication<br />
will become more dynamic using displays (e.g. in packaging,<br />
in store communication and interactive advertising). Also new types <strong>of</strong><br />
displays will have impact on Recreation, culture & education, introducing<br />
new devices for communication and presenting information (e.g. 3D<br />
television, <strong>the</strong> tablet/e-reader, virtual services, new interactive ways <strong>of</strong><br />
education). O<strong>the</strong>r final markets will use <strong>the</strong> developments in combination<br />
with o<strong>the</strong>r trends in innovation, like <strong>the</strong> combination <strong>of</strong> lab-on-achip,<br />
with advanced displays to enhance possibilities for location based<br />
environmental monitoring devices.<br />
