Those cells migrating through the node give rise to the notochord. However, in contrast<br />

to notochord formation in the chick, the cells that form the mouse notochord are thought to<br />

become integrated into the endoderm <strong>of</strong> the primitive gut (Jurand 1974; Sulik et al. 1994). <strong>The</strong>se<br />

cells can be seen as a band <strong>of</strong> small, ciliated cells extending rostrally from the node (Figure<br />

11.29). <strong>The</strong>y form the notochord by converging medially and folding <strong>of</strong>f in a dorsal direction<br />

from the ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> the gut.
