<strong>The</strong>se cells secrete the paracrine factor FGF10. FGF10 is<br />

capable <strong>of</strong> initiating the limb-forming interactions between<br />

the ectoderm and the mesoderm. If beads containing<br />

FGF10 are placed ectopically beneath the flank ectoderm,<br />

extra limbs emerge (Figure 16.4) (Ohuchi et al. 1997;<br />

Sekine et al. 1999).<br />
