Summary and F<strong>in</strong>al Comments<br />

Shane Moreman: I have been th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

what I am go<strong>in</strong>g to say this morn<strong>in</strong>g, and I<br />

realized that I am <strong>in</strong> a room with a number <strong>of</strong><br />

people who love art and who make art and<br />

who support art. Know<strong>in</strong>g that, I am assum<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it is go<strong>in</strong>g to be hard to shock you. When I<br />

was <strong>in</strong> Mexico City about three years ago, I<br />

was hang<strong>in</strong>g out with two performance artists<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, Poncho Lopez and La Congelada de<br />

Uva. Poncho Lopez was do<strong>in</strong>g an art project<br />

<strong>in</strong> which he was sav<strong>in</strong>g his ejaculations, and<br />

he had created this stand and he had <strong>the</strong>se<br />

great little jars. Every time he ejaculated, he<br />

saved it, he stored it <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> little jars and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n put it on display and people would come<br />

by and <strong>the</strong>y would look at <strong>the</strong> ejaculations.<br />

His whole po<strong>in</strong>t with that art project was that<br />

we get <strong>in</strong>to such a hurry for <strong>the</strong> end product,<br />

and look at what <strong>the</strong> end product is. It was<br />

awful. It was ugly. And we shouldn’t get <strong>in</strong><br />

a hurry, was his po<strong>in</strong>t. Enjoy <strong>the</strong> process.<br />

When I look back at what we did here, this<br />

was a really enjoyable process. It is sad that<br />

it’s over, but we don’t have to th<strong>in</strong>k about it as<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g over. This is a cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g process and<br />

we are go<strong>in</strong>g to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to evolve outside<br />

<strong>of</strong> this room. Be<strong>in</strong>g a little self-congratulatory<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> us, we have really come a long<br />

way <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g able to have <strong>the</strong>se very edgy<br />

conversations without be<strong>in</strong>g hateful to one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r, with no one explod<strong>in</strong>g and attack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r person. That is really tough to do. So<br />

you did a really good job, and you should be<br />

really proud <strong>of</strong> yourselves. I am very proud<br />

<strong>of</strong> you and all <strong>of</strong> us toge<strong>the</strong>r as a group.<br />

Brenda Allen: I echo most <strong>of</strong> Shane’s sentiments<br />

<strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that this has probably<br />

been more fruitful than we know. I <strong>in</strong>vite you<br />

to pause for a moment to th<strong>in</strong>k about what<br />

I asked you yesterday—what you hoped to<br />

get from us be<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r. Just th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />

that as we move <strong>in</strong>to this morn<strong>in</strong>g’s discussion.<br />

As Shane says, it is a way to bridge <strong>in</strong>to<br />

when you leave here. I suggest you consider<br />

tell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> group what you are go<strong>in</strong>g to do<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sights and <strong>in</strong>formation and, I trust,<br />

new relationships that you have ga<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>g Luke: My world is actually very, very quiet.<br />

I am probably <strong>the</strong> only person <strong>in</strong> an orchestra<br />

who is not actively mak<strong>in</strong>g sound. What that<br />

does for me is it makes me hyper-aware <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> musicians’ nonverbal communication<br />

because not only are <strong>the</strong>y perform<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

an <strong>in</strong>strument, <strong>the</strong>y are also perform<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir body language. And <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

overall performance relates to how I make my<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g. So it has been very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g for me to<br />

observe <strong>the</strong> body language <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> you while<br />

listen<strong>in</strong>g to you. I hear what you are say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

but what is unsaid is even more powerful.<br />

As we have considered <strong>the</strong> question “What<br />

is a leader?” <strong>the</strong> question for people like me<br />

is a little <strong>in</strong>timidat<strong>in</strong>g. We have talked about<br />

a leader hav<strong>in</strong>g strength—well, <strong>of</strong>ten, we<br />

don’t feel like we have strength or wisdom.<br />

And we may have respect that we don’t<br />

feel like we have earned. And we may not<br />

have <strong>the</strong> experience we need to fully lead.<br />

What is <strong>the</strong> essence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term to lead when<br />

you are not sure where you are lead<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

In my world, Leonard Bernste<strong>in</strong> is a major, major<br />

voice that cont<strong>in</strong>ues to affect most <strong>of</strong> us. <strong>The</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs he talked about were be<strong>in</strong>g passionate,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g dedicated, be<strong>in</strong>g strong <strong>in</strong> your convictions,<br />

and be<strong>in</strong>g honest. As we have talked,<br />

I see those qualities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> people here. I also<br />

hear people say <strong>the</strong>y don’t feel as though <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can take on <strong>the</strong> mantle <strong>of</strong> leadership, and yet<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir bodies are say<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y are already<br />

actively do<strong>in</strong>g so. So, for many, leadership<br />

is not a choice, and body language may<br />

position a person as a leader before <strong>the</strong>y feel<br />

comfortable proclaim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves a leader.<br />

Margo Aragon: When you received <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vitation<br />

to jo<strong>in</strong> us here, it really was an <strong>in</strong>vitation to<br />

play, and play is an important component <strong>of</strong> a<br />

healthy society. Americans don’t view play <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> way that, say, Sunya Ganbold was talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> play <strong>in</strong> her com-<br />
