up to me and ask<strong>in</strong>g me who is go<strong>in</strong>g to take<br />

over, and I am not dead yet. It’s like want<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

take your house, and you are still liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it. I also<br />

heard that <strong>the</strong> Gen Xers are turn<strong>in</strong>g 40, right?<br />

It is <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow, my friends.<br />

<strong>The</strong> idea is, “I am go<strong>in</strong>g to go to this po<strong>in</strong>t, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n I am go<strong>in</strong>g to stop, and somebody is go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to take it over from that very same place.”<br />

What I have seen <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> succession <strong>in</strong> arts<br />

organizations is that it becomes what it is after<br />

you are gone. It’s like a phenomenon: Once<br />

you die, someth<strong>in</strong>g else happens. It’s a void<br />

that happens, and someth<strong>in</strong>g fills it. I am start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to th<strong>in</strong>k about succession; I am go<strong>in</strong>g to go as<br />

far as I can go, and <strong>the</strong>n someth<strong>in</strong>g else will fill<br />

that space. And it may not be exactly <strong>the</strong> same<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g that you may have spent however<br />

many years creat<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>the</strong>re are a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs that will change with<strong>in</strong> that.<br />

This may be a jump, but somehow <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

connection here. When people talk about<br />

computers and <strong>in</strong>dividuals reject<strong>in</strong>g new<br />

technology, I understand what <strong>the</strong>y are talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about. As a <strong>the</strong>atre artist, I have tremendous<br />

frustration with one aspect <strong>of</strong> technology.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> microphone, because people<br />

can’t s<strong>in</strong>g loud anymore, actors all want to be<br />

mic’d. But this is a double-edged sword. We<br />

used to speak loudly because we didn’t have<br />

microphones; we performed out on <strong>the</strong> streets<br />

and did it wherever we had to do it. So <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a danger <strong>of</strong> los<strong>in</strong>g that skill, which is a valuable<br />

skill. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, we are see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people use technology to do o<strong>the</strong>r creative<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs with <strong>the</strong> voice, th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y were not able<br />

to do before. So <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>trusion <strong>of</strong> technology<br />

presents us with an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g dichotomy.<br />

Brenda Allen: That raises someth<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

came up earlier for me <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about technology period. Do you know <strong>the</strong><br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> technology? Technology is very<br />

simply extensions <strong>of</strong> what we can do. So <strong>the</strong>se<br />

glasses are technology. <strong>The</strong>y extend, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

allow me to see. This microphone is a type <strong>of</strong><br />

technology. Any medic<strong>in</strong>e you take is a type<br />

<strong>of</strong> technology. I am struggl<strong>in</strong>g with what I<br />

want to say here. It has someth<strong>in</strong>g to do with<br />

<strong>the</strong> idea that <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g new under <strong>the</strong><br />

sun, if you will—that <strong>the</strong>re are different k<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

<strong>of</strong> manifestations, but <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

changes brought about through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> new technology are noth<strong>in</strong>g new.<br />

Shawna Shandi<strong>in</strong> Sunrise: A batten and a<br />

comb.<br />

Brenda Allen: In terms <strong>of</strong> weav<strong>in</strong>g, yes. In<br />

some ways, with new technology, you are still<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g basic, but you have alternative<br />

and new ways <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g it. So it seems to<br />

me that part <strong>of</strong> what we might do, as we th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

about emerg<strong>in</strong>g leaders, as we th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />

transform<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g and so forth, some<br />

<strong>of</strong> our conversations might be around what is<br />

<strong>the</strong> root, what is <strong>the</strong> essence <strong>of</strong> that with which<br />

we are deal<strong>in</strong>g? And <strong>the</strong>n to share with one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r: Here are some ways that we have<br />

done it or our generation has done it. What are<br />

some newer ways with <strong>the</strong> technologies that<br />

are <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g to you? So I th<strong>in</strong>k this is someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that is really worth explor<strong>in</strong>g and play<strong>in</strong>g with. I<br />

hope I have been at least relatively clear with<br />

that, and I will try to work on it more as we move<br />

through <strong>the</strong> session. But I th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>re is someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

really significant with<strong>in</strong> that that we might<br />

miss if we are look<strong>in</strong>g just at <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

<strong>of</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g, “What is underneath this or what is<br />

overarch<strong>in</strong>g this that we all can agree upon?”<br />

Now I want to turn to a question that James<br />

Early brought up last night and also to someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that Samuel Aguiar Iñiguez mentioned, which is<br />

<strong>the</strong> notion that we are talk<strong>in</strong>g about leadership.<br />

I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k we have clarified that po<strong>in</strong>t and,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, we may be com<strong>in</strong>g from so many<br />

different places with it that our conversations<br />

may seem fruitful and engag<strong>in</strong>g, but we may<br />

be miss<strong>in</strong>g one ano<strong>the</strong>r. So what I want us to<br />

talk about for a few m<strong>in</strong>utes is what we mean<br />

when we say leadership. What are <strong>the</strong> different<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> contexts <strong>in</strong> which you lead or that you<br />

see yourself lead<strong>in</strong>g or that you would like our<br />

conversations to turn to? We may benefit from<br />

a list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> various perspectives on leadership.<br />
