Annette Evans Smith<br />
Annette Evans Smith is <strong>the</strong> vice president <strong>of</strong><br />
community relations at <strong>the</strong> Alaska Native<br />
Heritage Center. She is <strong>of</strong> Athabascan, Yup’ik,<br />
and Alutiiq descent. She was born <strong>in</strong> Fairbanks,<br />
Alaska, and raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural community <strong>of</strong><br />
Dill<strong>in</strong>gham. After graduat<strong>in</strong>g from high school,<br />
Evans Smith attended Stanford University, where<br />
she majored <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational relations and<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ored <strong>in</strong> Native American studies. In 1999,<br />
she moved to Anchorage and has worked <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational relations, public relations, and<br />
development for nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Southcentral Foundation and <strong>the</strong><br />
Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Forum, a non-governmental, <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
organization. She is currently work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on her MBA at Alaska Pacific University.<br />
Paul S. Flores<br />
Paul S. Flores is a published poet, performer,<br />
and author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> novel Along <strong>the</strong> Border Lies<br />
(Creative <strong>Arts</strong> Books, 2001), about <strong>the</strong> Tijuana-<br />
San Diego border community where he was<br />
raised. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1996, he has toured nationally as a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> San Francisco-based poetry performance<br />
troupe, Los Delicados, and has been<br />
a featured performer at <strong>The</strong> Nuyorican Poets<br />
Cafe, Chicago Museum <strong>of</strong> Contemporary <strong>Arts</strong>,<br />
Funk Jazz Lounge Miami, <strong>the</strong> Justice League,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> National Hip Hop Festival <strong>in</strong> La Habana,<br />
Cuba. He has also made two appearances on<br />
Russell Simmons Presents: Def Poetry on HBO.<br />
He is <strong>the</strong> co-author <strong>of</strong> three plays <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> genre<br />
<strong>of</strong> hip-hop and spoken-word <strong>the</strong>atre, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
No Man’s Land with Marc Bamuthi Joseph and<br />
<strong>The</strong> Fruitvale Project with Elia Arce. As artistic<br />
director <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Chicano Messengers <strong>of</strong> Spoken<br />
Word, Flores has recently been awarded <strong>the</strong><br />
National Performance Network Creation Fund<br />
to develop his newest <strong>the</strong>atre project, Fear <strong>of</strong><br />
a Brown Planet. Flores holds an MFA <strong>in</strong> creative<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g from San Francisco State University. He<br />
is also <strong>the</strong> program director <strong>of</strong> Youth Speaks,<br />
<strong>the</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it literary arts center for teenagers<br />
<strong>in</strong> San Francisco responsible for creat<strong>in</strong>g Brave<br />
<strong>New</strong> Voices: <strong>the</strong> National Teen Poetry Slam.<br />
Sunya Ganbold<br />
Born <strong>in</strong> Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Sunya Ganbold<br />
was raised <strong>in</strong> Moscow dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Socialist<br />
80s. She studied at a Russian high school <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> Mongolia and at K<strong>in</strong>g’s School<br />
<strong>in</strong> Worcester, United K<strong>in</strong>gdom, followed by a<br />
year as an exchange student <strong>in</strong> Grosse Po<strong>in</strong>te<br />
South High School <strong>in</strong> Michigan. She later<br />
enrolled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> International College at Beij<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
where she studied economics and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />
language. At <strong>the</strong> International College, she<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiated and served as <strong>the</strong> editor-<strong>in</strong>-chief for<br />
<strong>the</strong> first grassroots student newspaper to be<br />
published <strong>in</strong> English on any Ch<strong>in</strong>ese college<br />
campus. She completed her f<strong>in</strong>al year <strong>of</strong> college<br />
at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Colorado at Denver (<strong>the</strong><br />
International College’s sister campus), where<br />
she received a B.A. <strong>in</strong> economics with a m<strong>in</strong>or<br />
<strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>formation design. Ganbold’s career<br />
highlights <strong>in</strong>clude work<strong>in</strong>g as a project coord<strong>in</strong>ator<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Mongolian Art and Folk Festival <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>New</strong> York City <strong>in</strong> 2002 and work<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> public<br />
relations and market<strong>in</strong>g coord<strong>in</strong>ator for <strong>the</strong><br />
Museum <strong>of</strong> Contemporary Art/Denver for almost<br />
four years. Recently, she completed work<br />
as <strong>the</strong> project manager for Radiotelevisione<br />
Italiana’s (RAI 1) two-hour special on Ch<strong>in</strong>ggis<br />
Khan, led by <strong>the</strong> legendary Piero Angela, Italy’s<br />
most important and well-known journalist.<br />
Anthony J. Garcia<br />
Anthony J. Garcia has been <strong>the</strong> executive<br />
artistic director at El Centro Su Teatro s<strong>in</strong>ce 1989<br />
and has been director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Su Teatro <strong>The</strong>ater<br />
Company s<strong>in</strong>ce 1974. He is on <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Chicana/Chicano Studies at<br />
