you have that apprehension, when you have<br />

that, “Oh, what are <strong>the</strong>y go<strong>in</strong>g to th<strong>in</strong>k?” k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>of</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g. Pause and remember why you are<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to do what you are try<strong>in</strong>g to do; feel <strong>the</strong><br />

strength <strong>of</strong> those o<strong>the</strong>rs, absent and present.<br />

I want to leave you with a particular way to do<br />

this. It is related to a concept you may have<br />

heard about called lim<strong>in</strong>ality. <strong>The</strong> concept<br />

relates to one be<strong>in</strong>g poised on <strong>the</strong> doorstep<br />

<strong>of</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g. I read this somewhere, and I<br />

regret that I cannot tell you <strong>the</strong> actual source.<br />

This is not my wisdom, but I am wise enough<br />

to accept it. It is <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> doorways, so<br />

that any time you pass through a doorway,<br />

pause for a moment and th<strong>in</strong>k about what is<br />

my <strong>in</strong>tention as I enter this room, as I leave this<br />

place to go to <strong>the</strong> next place. Even when I<br />

get <strong>in</strong> my automobile, when I am play<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

this idea <strong>of</strong> doorways, I th<strong>in</strong>k about as I am on<br />

my way somewhere, “What is my <strong>in</strong>tention?”<br />

And I am open to chang<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong>tention<br />

as I get <strong>the</strong>re, but it is this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>dfulness<br />

that I spoke <strong>of</strong> earlier, this present-moment<br />

awareness. In this moment, what am I <strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and how might I accomplish that?<br />

Paul Flores: I wanted to say a few th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

based on <strong>the</strong> summaries that I heard, which<br />

were all cool. Thank you so much for th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about what you were go<strong>in</strong>g to say. One<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g that I thought about com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to this<br />

weekend was leadership, and I came up with<br />

two categories—one <strong>of</strong> trailblazers and <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> nurturers. Trailblazers are those folks<br />

who go and do it and who are always at <strong>the</strong><br />

forefront <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs and make paths for o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

to follow. Nurturers are those folks who nurture<br />

and help, and that is <strong>the</strong>ir leadership style. I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>re are many categories <strong>of</strong> leaders.<br />

But I do want to say this: I am a firm believer <strong>in</strong><br />

mentorship—mentorship as <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g new leaders. I th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re are a lot <strong>of</strong> folks <strong>in</strong> here who have<br />

mentored or been mentored. I myself have<br />

been mentored on several different occasions. I<br />

am here because I have a mentor; Tony Garcia<br />

has helped me do a lot <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> my career as<br />

a leader as well as an artist. I want to say that I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k all <strong>of</strong> you and all <strong>of</strong> us need to figure out a<br />

way to actively pursue somebody to mentor. To<br />

me, if you are creat<strong>in</strong>g, adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g, study<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

it’s up to you and your job to f<strong>in</strong>d someone<br />

whom you can nurture as well and show <strong>the</strong>m<br />

your trail so that <strong>the</strong>y can go far<strong>the</strong>r than you.<br />

That is someth<strong>in</strong>g you cannot be scared <strong>of</strong><br />

do<strong>in</strong>g—giv<strong>in</strong>g up your control on certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

that you have done and show<strong>in</strong>g someone<br />

how to go far<strong>the</strong>r than you. I believe that’s<br />

<strong>the</strong> job <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mentor and <strong>the</strong> mentee; his or<br />

her job is to take what has been learned from<br />

you and blow it up and go even fur<strong>the</strong>r, take it<br />

beyond. I feel like a lot <strong>of</strong> leaders are afraid <strong>of</strong><br />

that, afraid <strong>of</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong>ir time and history<br />

and effort <strong>in</strong>to hav<strong>in</strong>g somebody else take it<br />

and run. But you only have one life to live here.<br />

That is what you should be do<strong>in</strong>g. So don’t<br />

resist <strong>the</strong> folks who are at your door, knock<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on how <strong>the</strong>y want to go far<strong>the</strong>r than you.<br />

Don’t block <strong>the</strong>m. Actually nurture <strong>the</strong>m, take<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir energy, even if it looks a little cocky and<br />

confident. Figure out a way to help <strong>the</strong>m along.<br />

Samuel Aguiar Iñiguez: I want to talk about an<br />

expectation that I had here. I am go<strong>in</strong>g to use<br />

<strong>the</strong> analogy <strong>of</strong> a marriage center, where you<br />

go to get a bride or you go to get a husband<br />

when you are look<strong>in</strong>g for a relationship. I came<br />

here look<strong>in</strong>g for a certa<strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> relationship,<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g I came here, I knew what my strengths<br />

were, and I knew what my weaknesses were,<br />

and I knew some certa<strong>in</strong> aspects about myself<br />

that I wasn’t sure <strong>of</strong>, but I had a good idea.<br />

And as I leave here, I th<strong>in</strong>k we are all leaders<br />

here. I have seen everybody <strong>in</strong>teract with each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, I see everyone network<strong>in</strong>g, and we are<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g for those qualities that we are miss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r. We are look<strong>in</strong>g for qualities to fill<br />

<strong>the</strong> gap, <strong>the</strong> void, to mend or fulfill <strong>the</strong> qualities<br />

that we have. When we leave here today, I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k all <strong>of</strong> us have done a good job <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people at this symposium that we are go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely stay <strong>in</strong> touch with because we need to<br />

collaborate, to connect our artistic values and<br />

ideals to make someth<strong>in</strong>g happen as leaders. I<br />
