Total solutions and innovative contracts
More and more often, Boskalis thinks up and
implements its own solutions rather than carrying
out other people’s plans. That results in innovative
contracts.
“Together, you try to think up the best solutions.
It makes our work more interesting and challenging,
opening up the way for innovation”. These are the
words of Jelke Jan de With, director at Boskalis bv.
“These days, contracts bring together the expertise
and skills of two (or more) parties in order to achieve
the best possible result. The client and the contractor
are both responsible for the progress of the project”.
Good collaboration means being able to act quickly.
“An advanced public-private initiative”, continues
Jelke Jan de With, “also means that Road 11 between
Alphen aan den Rijn and Bodegraven in South Holland
can go into use two years earlier than planned.”
The road is being built under a Design, Build, Maintain
& Finance contract involving a consortium led by
Boskalis.
A step further is taken by the contract used for a
section of the Betuwe route, the railway for freight
transport from the port of Rotterdam to Germany.
For the construction of the Sliedrecht-Gorinchem
section, Boskalis (acting in a joint venture) and the
client, Dutch Railways, split up the original Design,
Structure & Maintain contract into a building
contract and an alliance agreement. The building
contract covers construction and maintenance.
The alliance is responsible for the design and risk
management. The public and private parties collaborate
closely in the alliance, which is led by an alliance
manager from Boskalis. Together, they manage all the
project risks and strive after efficiency and profit.
According to Jelke Jan de With, alliance and implementation
interact. “And that is good for the project:
this part of the route is the only one that will be
completed on time and within budget”.
