The concept of leadership has changed over the<br />
years. For instance, in the pre-industrial age of<br />
civilisation, a leader was generally an individual who<br />
possessed the greatest strength. With industrialisation,<br />
leadership become synonymous with intelligence. In<br />
today's world, leaders need to mobilise human and<br />
other resources of an organisation. Leadership has a lot<br />
to do with drawing the very best from each and every<br />
employee in the organisation. Effective leaders need to<br />
believe in action. Great leaders possess the ability to<br />
spot opportunities and the ability to mobilise the<br />
organisation to take advantage of these opportunities,<br />
learning how to develop consensus from various<br />
viewpoints and communicate effectively are important<br />
attributes of leaders.<br />
Some other essential attributes that effective<br />

Technical competence is not all. It is your ability<br />
to react to situations and people that counts<br />
more.<br />

Always listen carefully and think hard<br />
before speaking.<br />
Come in 30 minutes before your boss and leave<br />
15 months after him or her.<br />
Be transparent, honest and hard working.<br />
Be a risk taker<br />
Never write anything in an emotionally charged<br />
state.<br />
Leaders need to work along side other staff<br />
members. Do not ask them to do something you<br />
won't do.<br />
Be available to do what every one else needs or<br />
wants to do<br />
Energy and a passion for continuous learning.<br />
Leaders often fail because they fail to put the<br />
right people in the right jobs and they fail to fix<br />
problems in time. So while all leaders need to<br />
remember to delegate, they need to first get the<br />
right people to whom they can delegate<br />
