The concept of leadership has changed over the
years. For instance, in the pre-industrial age of
civilisation, a leader was generally an individual who
possessed the greatest strength. With industrialisation,
leadership become synonymous with intelligence. In
today's world, leaders need to mobilise human and
other resources of an organisation. Leadership has a lot
to do with drawing the very best from each and every
employee in the organisation. Effective leaders need to
believe in action. Great leaders possess the ability to
spot opportunities and the ability to mobilise the
organisation to take advantage of these opportunities,
learning how to develop consensus from various
viewpoints and communicate effectively are important
attributes of leaders.
Some other essential attributes that effective
leaders should possess include the following :-

Technical competence is not all. It is your ability
to react to situations and people that counts
more.
Remember power comes to those who show
results.
Always listen carefully and think hard
before speaking.
Come in 30 minutes before your boss and leave
15 months after him or her.
Be transparent, honest and hard working.
Be a risk taker
Never write anything in an emotionally charged
state.
Leaders need to work along side other staff
members. Do not ask them to do something you
won't do.
Be available to do what every one else needs or
wants to do
Energy and a passion for continuous learning.
Leaders often fail because they fail to put the
right people in the right jobs and they fail to fix
problems in time. So while all leaders need to
remember to delegate, they need to first get the
right people to whom they can delegate
