It is such a privilege to walk through the
halls and visit classrooms. Your children
have their days dedicated to learning.
Please give them credit for the fine job
they are doing, focusing on their tasks
and working well together. The teachers
have worked to create safe and secure
learning environments. Within hours, a
group of children becomes a class, a
group dedicated to learning and working
together. Transition from the crowded
feeling of parents and children separating
on the first day of classes to engaging
in an effective learning group is an
important part of every school year.
Credit for this transition lies in teaching
skills that make most of us marvel—
How do they do that? Credit also goes to
a culture of interest in learning from
home, from parents and children. This
culture of learning seeps into the foundation
for motivation. Similar to
researchers such as Collins (1991) have
found about workers, I’ve noticed that
children interested in learning don’t
really need motivation to learn. They
need to stay around people that let them
go about the tasks of learning. Their
only real distraction is anyone uninterested
in learning. Thanks for being part
of building this culture of learning at
ISS.
To give you an understanding of the way
things work and the basics of the curriculum
at ISS, an Open House for parents
is schedule starting at 18:30 in the
L ovelace Theater at ISS. At 18:30,
teachers of specialist areas that all children
see will give short presentations. At
19:30, class teachers, or homeroom
teachers, will offer information sessions
particular to children within each grade
level. Teachers will give you information
that helps tie up loose ends and
makes learning more effective for your
children. To help ensure you have an
opportunity to visit the class of each of
your children, the sessions are repeated
at 20:00. Parents of students in Grade 5
will get additional information about
band at 19:55 or 20:00 in one of the fifth
grade homerooms. Open House for parents
of students in Pre-School and Pre-K
will be from 18:00 to 18:30 in the Pre-
School Room, 15.
Because we realize that sometimes it has
been complicated to find childcare so
parents can attend Open House, I would
