bring your children to the classrooms on
this evening as we would like to convey
information to parents in the most effective
manner possible.
School photographs will be taken during
the week of September 5-9. Specific
dates and times for each class are listed
in this issue of The Informer.
Part of our effective learning process at
ISS is built around volunteers. If you
would like to be part of volunteering at
ISS, please contact the Pa r e n t
Association representative, Mrs. Cheryl
H oga r t h < c h oga rth@yahoo.com>, so
your efforts can best be utilized. We
appreciate your help and interest.
I encourage you to attend the Parent
Association Leisure Fair of activities at
17:30, August 30, in the ISS cafeteria.
Getting your children involved in a reas
o n a ble amount of local activ i t i e s
(scouting, a local sports club, music
lessons, crafts, a special interest group
or a school-based activity) helps your
children develop habits that make them
healthy life-long learners. During the
next weeks, we will be canvassing your
children to consider need for additional
activities offered by ISS teachers.
The summer still has some long
evenings and weekends. This year is
friluftsåret, and Norway has a great outdoors
to offer. You might consider a
family trip to a cabin in the mountains.
One offering open to everyone are the
cabins and events run by Stava n g e r
Turistforening. They have found ways
for families to get to the mountains and
not get too stressed. The Children’s
Hiking Club (Barnas Turlag) has a wide
variety of reasonably affordable events
listed on their we b p a g e

deadline. For example, there is a mushroom
hunt at Rogaland Arboretum on
September 10, a train trip and hike on
West Norway ’s Main Road (Den
Ve s t l a n d s ke Hove d vei) on September
11, orienteering in Sørmarka here in
Stavanger on September 18, a rock trip
in Tananger sponsored by the
Geological Association on September
25 (free), a climbing course for children
over 6 years of age on October 1, and a
bit longer hike to Bynuten on October 2.
