August 26, 2005 The Informer News from the High School Counselor... Counseling Calendar of Events TESTING –The Counseling Office will offer the following tests during the fall semester. 1 . P S AT / N M S Q T – P r e l i m i n a r y Scholastic Aptitude Te s t / N a t i o n a l Merit Qualifying Test: Administered on Saturday October 15, 2005 ( report to the ISS test center by 08:00 AM). This is a test for 11th grade students (and 10th graders for practice) with plans to study in North America. The PSAT/NMSQT uses the same format as the SAT (see below) with verbal and mathematical sections. This test is useful both as practice for the SAT and predictor of SAT scores. T h e PSAT/NMSQT also serves as a basis for awarding some merit scholarships. The registration deadline is October 5th. 2. TOEFL –Test of English as a Foreign Language: Administered on Saturday, October 15, 2005 (report to the ISS test center by 08:00 AM). This is a test for non-native English speakers (or native English speakers holding passports from countries where the official language is one other than English). The TOEFL uses a multiple choice format, is given in a single session of about three hours, and consists of three sections –Listening C o m p r e h e n s i o n , E n g l i s h S t ructure/Written Expression, and Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension. R egistration is on line at www.toefl.org 3. ACT – American College Te s t : Administered on Saturday October 22 & Saturday, December 10, 2005, February 11 & April 8, 2006(report to the ISS test center by 08:00 AM). This test assesses students’ abilities in four academic areas –English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. The ACT is commonly required by public colleges and some private colleges in the US Midwest, West, and South. 4. SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Te s t : Administered on Saturday October 8, November 5, 2005, Saturday January 28 & May 6, 2006 (report to the ISS test center between 07:45 and 08:00 AM). You should sit for the SAT if you are a 10th or 11th grade student with plans to study in North America. This is a three-hour exam in two sections measuring verbal and mathematical reasoning ability. 5. SAT II – Scholastic Aptitude Subject Test: Most subject tests are administered on the same dates as the SAT, though not always (check www.collegeboard.com for availability). This is a one-hour test measuring both knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in specific subject areas. It is possible to sit for as many as three tests on one date.
