GARTEUR LIMITED ANNEX E Effects of coatings on fatigue performance E.1 Introduction Surface treatments such as etching, abrasive blasting, electroplating and anodising may have a serious effect on the fatigue resistance of a component. The aim of the testing programme undertaken was to establish the degree to which the cadmium substitute coatings reduce the fatigue strength of an aerospace grade, high strength steel. The testing was undertaken by SAAB, British Aerospace and the NLR. Detailed reports have been prepared by the NLR [E1] and SAAB [E2] and giving information about the test programme and fatigue data obtained. This annex outlines the test procedures used and summarises the main findings. E.2 Test procedures The influence of coatings on the fatigue crack initiation was determined using constant amplitude fatigue tests. Notched fatigue specimens were employed with stress concentration factors (K t ) of 1.4, 2.5 and 4. E.2.1 Materials and specimen types Fatigue specimens used by NLR and SAAB were machined from 2.54cm diameter bars of AISI 4340 steel heat treated to HT200 strength level. Tensile tests performed by SAAB indicated that the strength level was 1400 MPa. Specimens used by BAe were prepared from BAC M53 steel, which was heat treated to the HT200 condition. The details of the specimen designs employed by the three laboratories are given in figure E1. E.2.2 Coatings and surface pretreatments The fatigue test programme covered the following coatings:- • ED cadmium, ED zinc-nickel, ED zinc-cobalt-iron, • SermeTel, Delta-tone, • UBMS aluminium - magnesium, ED aluminium In addition tests were conducted on samples which had not been plated. The normal treatment prior to applying the coating was to stress relieve the specimens at 420 o C for 1 hour and then to alumina grit blast the surface. Further details are given in Annex A and in reference E1. E.2.3 Fatigue testing The fatigue testing was carried out using High Frequency Pulsator (HFP) machines. The test frequency was in the range 150 to 200 Hz and the applied stress ratio R=0.1. At SAAB and BAe testing was continued until failure occurred or the total number of cycles exceeded 10 7 . In the SAAB test programme specimens, which had not failed after 10 7 cycles were generally re-tested at a higher stress level. At NLR fatigue testing was continued until 5 to 10 x10 7 cycles was reached. GARTEUR SM/AG17 TP128 Page 79
