Create New Traditions for Students at USD to Increase School Spirit
Our data suggests students do not attend the sporting events due to a lack of
school spirit. This presents an opportunity to increase school spirit so students will
be more likely to attend games to support their school. Ways to increase school spirit
include:
in the MUC and have a pep band to play music.
• Wear red Fridays – by requesting students to wear the school colors it promotes
students to show their school spirit in their clothing and can promote a unity
in the school. This suggestion has been done at USD previously, but it needs
better promotion since there is a lack of participation from students.
• Charlie Coyote – as stated prior, Charlie Coyote symbolizes our University and
promotes school spirit.
• Student Athletes – by having regular students get to know the student athletes,
it may increase school spirit because they know the team members and will want
to come support them on game days.
• Traditions – Dakota Days and SDSU rivalry are the biggest traditions at USD, but
new traditions can still be developed to increase school spirit. New traditions could
be more frequent pep rallies, or wear red competitions.
By increasing the school spirit the number of students who attend games will increase,
therefore it is a great opportunity for the Athletic Department to focus on.
