rude; the construction is usually rubble. When<br />

<strong>of</strong> ashlar, the joints are very wide, and the capitals<br />

<strong>of</strong> the shafts clumsy.<br />

St. Alban's Abbey Church, built in the time <strong>of</strong> William<br />

the Conqueror and William Eufus, as distinctly<br />

recorded by contemporary historians, partakes<br />

Saxon character in many parts : we find baluster shafts<br />

abundance, quantities <strong>of</strong> Eoman tiles, and other<br />

features usually considered Saxon, but there is not the<br />

slightestdoubt that the church was built from the<br />
