THE QUICKEST FIX.<br />

Surprisingly often a difficult problem in a sentence can be<br />

solved by simply getting rid of it. Unfortunately, this soluti<strong>on</strong> is<br />

usually the last <strong>on</strong>e that occurs to writers in a jam. First they<br />

will put the troublesome phrase through all kinds of exerti<strong>on</strong>s—moving<br />

it to some other part of the sentence, trying to<br />

rephrase it, adding new words to clarify the thought or to oil<br />

whatever is stuck. These efforts <strong>on</strong>ly make the situati<strong>on</strong> worse,<br />

and the writer is left to c<strong>on</strong>clude that there is no soluti<strong>on</strong> to the<br />

problem—not a comforting thought. When you find yourself at<br />

such an impasse, look at the troublesome element and ask, "Do<br />

I need it at all?" Probably you d<strong>on</strong>'t. It was trying to do an<br />

unnecessary job all al<strong>on</strong>g—that's why it was giving you so much<br />

grief. Remove it and watch the afflicted sentence spring to life<br />

and breathe normally. It's the quickest cure and very often the<br />

best.<br />

PARAGRAPHS.<br />

Keep your paragraphs short. Writing is visual—it catches the<br />

eye before it has a chance to catch the brain. Short paragraphs<br />

put air around what you write and make it look inviting, whereas<br />

a l<strong>on</strong>g chunk of type can discourage a reader from even starting<br />

to read.<br />

Newspaper paragraphs should be <strong>on</strong>ly two or three sentences<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g; newspaper type is set in a narrow width, and the<br />

inches quickly add up. You may think such frequent paragraphing<br />

will damage the development of your point. Obviously The<br />

New Yorker is obsessed by this fear—a reader can go for miles<br />

without relief. D<strong>on</strong>'t worry; the gains far outweigh the hazards.<br />

But d<strong>on</strong>'t go berserk. A successi<strong>on</strong> of tiny paragraphs is as<br />

annoying as a paragraph that's too l<strong>on</strong>g. I'm thinking of all those<br />

midget paragraphs—verbless w<strong>on</strong>ders—written by modern<br />

journalists trying to make their articles quick 'n' easy. Actually<br />

they make the reader's job harder by chopping up a natural train
