Only a very few voices were raised in protest over what<br />
Arnold Toynbee called "<strong>the</strong> calamity." Several writers, Olivia<br />
Maria O'Grady among <strong>the</strong>m, joined in <strong>the</strong> protest against <strong>the</strong><br />
Sykes Picot partitioning plan that led to <strong>the</strong> so-called Balfour<br />
Declaration:<br />
Throughout <strong>the</strong> war, England and her allies continuously<br />
proclaimed that <strong>the</strong>y were fighting for world freedom.<br />
What kind of a freedom is contained in <strong>the</strong> Balfour<br />
Declaration? By what right did Britain propose to dispose<br />
of <strong>the</strong> land of ano<strong>the</strong>r people? Upon what moral ground<br />
may one nation seek to establish a national home for<br />
alien people in <strong>the</strong> territory of ano<strong>the</strong>r? Palestine did not<br />
belong to Britain.<br />
Arnold Toynbee was a greatly favored British historian<br />
and public figure of note who had received universal recognition<br />
for his work, A Study of History, comprising ten volumes,<br />
constituting an exhaustive re-examination of human development<br />
in <strong>the</strong> light of <strong>the</strong> idealist philosophy of history.<br />
Thus no one would dare call McDonald, Toynbee and<br />
Lawrence of Arabia "anti-Jewish" or "anti-Semitic" <strong>the</strong> threat of<br />
which had kept so many o<strong>the</strong>rs of a like mind from speaking out<br />
against <strong>the</strong> duplicity of <strong>the</strong> British Government as expressed in<br />
<strong>the</strong> illicit Balfour Declaration. Toynbee expressed his feelings of<br />
anger about <strong>the</strong> betrayal of <strong>the</strong> Arabs over Palestine in A Study of<br />
History.<br />
While <strong>the</strong> direct responsibility for <strong>the</strong> calamity that<br />
overtook <strong>the</strong> Palestinian Arabs in A.D., 1948 was on <strong>the</strong><br />
heads of Zionist Jews who seized lebensroum for<br />
