attacked <strong>the</strong> barricades in Paris and broke <strong>the</strong> hold of <strong>the</strong><br />

Communists. But in <strong>the</strong> meantime, before <strong>the</strong> assault of <strong>the</strong><br />

French and German regular troops broke <strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong> mob<br />

led by <strong>the</strong> rebellious National Guard, <strong>the</strong> Communists exacted<br />

fearful reprisals. Sixty-seven innocent hostages were butchered at<br />

Fort Vincennes.<br />

The Archbishop of Darboy was shot down like a dog, as<br />

were a number of his priests. Prominent citizens were also<br />

summarily shot. This happened even as <strong>the</strong> troops of <strong>the</strong> Third<br />

Republic were entering <strong>the</strong> city.<br />

On May 20, 1871, <strong>the</strong> Communists drenched all those<br />

sections of Paris under <strong>the</strong>ir siege with gasoline, setting fire to all<br />

public buildings and most private property, including homes. The<br />

Tuileries, <strong>the</strong> Ministry of Finance, <strong>the</strong> Palais Royal, <strong>the</strong> Ministry<br />

of Justice, <strong>the</strong> City Hall and <strong>the</strong> police headquarters were all set<br />

on fire and burned to <strong>the</strong> ground.<br />

By a miracle, <strong>the</strong> sumptuous House of Rothschild and its<br />

priceless possessions remained untouched. As always<br />

before, <strong>the</strong> House of Rothschild emerged from <strong>the</strong> hazards<br />

of <strong>the</strong> war of 1870-1871 and <strong>the</strong> Paris Commune,<br />

financially unshaken and still <strong>the</strong> undisputed masters of<br />

Europe. Again <strong>the</strong> Rothschilds showed <strong>the</strong>y were capable<br />

of switching <strong>the</strong>ir allegiance from <strong>the</strong> monarchy and<br />

bestowing it with equal devotion to <strong>the</strong> Third Republic.<br />

Alfonse Rothschild, of course, withdrew to Versailles,<br />

and took a room in <strong>the</strong> Hotel des Reservoirs where he<br />

lived throughout <strong>the</strong> fighting, looting and <strong>the</strong> terrors of<br />

<strong>the</strong> revolution.<br />
