firm of Frank and Gans. Under <strong>the</strong> instructions of <strong>the</strong> Rothschilds<br />

he started his own brokerage house of Budge, Schiff and Co. in<br />

1867. The partnership lasted for about six years and was<br />

dissolved in 1873 at which time Schiff went to Europe.<br />

After a tour of German banking firms in 1873 he<br />

returned to <strong>the</strong> United States in 1875, and was made a member of<br />

<strong>the</strong> banking firm Kuhn, Loeb and Co., a well known "front" for<br />

Rothschild banking interests in America. Schiff hated Russia and<br />

saw in a Russo-Japanese War <strong>the</strong> chance to strike a blow against<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tsars and perhaps bring about <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>ir rule over<br />

Russia.<br />

By his express order, Kuhn, Loeb and Co., floated <strong>the</strong><br />

three large Japanese war loans in 1904 and 1905. In appreciation<br />

he was awarded <strong>the</strong> Second Order of <strong>the</strong> Sacred Treasure of<br />

Japan. After <strong>the</strong> decisive defeat of <strong>the</strong> Russian fleet at Port<br />

Arthur, <strong>the</strong> stage was set for <strong>the</strong> grave unrest in Russia that was to<br />

follow:<br />
