continuously to make possible <strong>the</strong> entry of Jewish<br />

immigrants into Palestine, contrary to <strong>the</strong> will, in despite<br />

of <strong>the</strong> protests and without regard to <strong>the</strong> forebodings of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Arab inhabitants of <strong>the</strong> country who in A.D. 1918,<br />

were duly to become <strong>the</strong> victims of this long pursued<br />

British policy.<br />

Lawrence of Arabia (Colonel Lawrence), who could less<br />

still be accused of anti-Jewish bias or smeared as "anti Semitic"<br />

did not remain silent over <strong>the</strong> betrayal of his commitment to <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabs:<br />

If we won <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>the</strong> promises to <strong>the</strong> Arabs were dead<br />

paper. Yet <strong>the</strong> Arab inspiration was our main tool in<br />

winning <strong>the</strong> Eastern War. So I assured <strong>the</strong>m that England<br />

kept her word in letter and in spirit. In this comfort <strong>the</strong>y<br />

performed <strong>the</strong>ir fine things; but, of course, instead of<br />

being proud of what we did toge<strong>the</strong>r, I was bitterly<br />

ashamed.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r voices added to what Lawrence had expressed as a<br />

feeling of utter betrayal, among <strong>the</strong>m, O'Grady:<br />

Colonel Lawrence had good reason to be ashamed. While<br />

<strong>the</strong> Arabs were fighting and dying for England, Britain's<br />

Foreign Minister, Arthur Balfour was bartering Palestine<br />

for a Jewish pledge to bring <strong>the</strong> United States into <strong>the</strong> war<br />

on England's side. In
