Rich Chinese are willing
to pay the price for this popular
location with its international
fl air. The 108 Rich Gate
apartments sold for 2.8 million
euro each. Owners get
400 square metres of luxuriously
outfitted living space
including Miele built-in appliances
in the kitchen.
Travelling from Shanghai
to Hangzhou around 150 km
to the south by car takes
around three hours. The capital
of the Zhejiang province is
home to around seven million
people and located on West
Lake, a popular recreation
spot in the region. Gently rolling
hills known for excellent
teas rise into view just beyond
the lake. Between the edge of
the city and the tea fi elds, the
Nine Tree housing development
is tucked away in a picturesque
bamboo grove.
The twelve five-storey
build ings have a cubic floor
plan and each of the 350-433
square metre apartments takes
up a whole fl oor. Prospective
buyers can view two completely
outfitted show flats.
The furnishings are modern
European with designer pieces
and elements from famous
furniture brands. The kitchens
in all 60 apartments are from
Bulthaup and Miele: there are
eight built-in appliances plus
a washing machine and dryer
in an adjacent laundry room.
Quick thinking buyers who
purchased their units when
construction commenced paid
3,000 euro/sqm. As soon as the
fi rst buildings were ready for
viewing, the price shot up to
4,200 euro/sqm. By October
2007 – three months before
the expected completion of
the entire project – 54 of the
60 apart ments had already
been sold.
Beijing is in Olympic
fever. Many residents
are already decked
out with T-shirts, pins, caps
and other souvenirs purchased
at one of the innumerable offi
cial shops. Hardly a street car
can be found that does not
bear advertising for the organiser
or sponsors of “Beijing
2008”. At Tiananmen Square,
the largest square in the world,
the antique Greek athletic
arenas have been recreated
using fl ower arrangements.
