The rule of thumb at Miele has always been to manufacture energy saving household appliances that use fewer resources and are gentle to the environment from the production stage onwards. Environmental protection has been an important topic in the day-to-day running of the company for over 30 years now. The continual drive to optimise water and electricity consumption is just one example. Miele automatic washers employ powerful and reliable drive concepts with innovative sensors and perfectly tuned electronics. It is no accident that they regularly receive the highest marks for energy effi ciency, washing performance and spin effi ciency – whether in international comparisons or for the energy label classifi cation system required by the European Union. Some of the individual components that infl uence energy consumption in automatic washers are the ball valve under the suds container, which ensures that only as much water as is needed for washing is heated, the pressure sensor on the circuit board in the electronic controls responsible for monitoring the amount of water added, or frequency-regulated drive motors. The AllWater washing machine (not available on all markets) offers additional savings potential for individualists since it can be run with either well water or hot water. Compared to cold water operation, using hot water saves a considerable amount of energy and electricity in particular. Calculated based on a four-person household using 250 mixed laundry programmes a year, the AllWater washing machine can save 40% in electricity along with 21% in primary energy, 28% in energy costs and up to 9% in time. Along with the AllWater, all other Miele household appliances offer consumers ways of actively controlling consumption, such as the short and energy saving programmes in automatic washers or dishwashers that allow washing and rinsing to be carried out exactly as needed. Automatic programmes in ovens and sensible functions like residual heat utilisation also help limit energy use. The company expects its manufacturing plants to meet very high standards as well. In keeping with the company philosophy: “Forever better”, Miele continues to work to improve environmental protection. Quite successfully as the most recent data show. Despite a considerable increase in production of 20.4%, energy consumption only went up by only 1.2%, considerably less than such a production increase would lead one to expect. The in-house energy management system, in place for years now, is responsible for this success. Production emissions even dropped by 2.9% despite the increase in production. Additional measures like switching to district heating and natural gas, the use of modern facility and fi lter technology and building insulation have also been incorporated. Miele is looking forward to facing the major challenge in the foreseeable future: to further optimise both processes and facilities. So far this strategy has yielded economic benefi ts, enabling the company to continue to make use of the full potential in environmental protection in future as well. The consumer is ultimately the one who will choose to place their trust in this successful strategy.
