Organization<br />
The <strong>Bedford</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oceanography</strong> (BIO), the Halifax<br />
Fisheries Research Laboratory (HFRL) and the St. Andrews<br />
Biological Station (SABS) are research establishments <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Government <strong>of</strong> Canada operated by the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), both on its own behalf and, in the<br />
case <strong>of</strong> BIO, for the other federal departments that maintain<br />
laboratories and groups at the <strong>Institute</strong>. There are two such<br />
departments: The Department <strong>of</strong> Energy, Mines and Resources<br />
(DEMR); and the Department <strong>of</strong> the Environment (DOE). The<br />
former maintains two units at BIO: the Atlantic Geoscience<br />
Centre <strong>of</strong> the Geological Survey <strong>of</strong> Canada; and the Canada Oil<br />
and Gas Lands Administration Laboratory. The Department <strong>of</strong><br />
the Environment also maintains two units at BIO: the Seabird<br />
Research Unit <strong>of</strong> the Canadian Wildlife Service; and the<br />
Regional Laboratory <strong>of</strong> the Atlantic Region’s Environmental<br />
Protection organization.<br />
