The State of Dialogue Index is constructed from aggregate responses to nine questions.
• Do you think <strong>the</strong> Muslim world <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern world are getting along well with each o<strong>the</strong>r today?
• Do you believe <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern world respects <strong>the</strong> Muslim world?
• Do you believe <strong>the</strong> Muslim world respects <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern world?
• Is <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> interaction between <strong>the</strong> Muslim <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern world important to you?
• Do you think <strong>the</strong> interaction between <strong>the</strong> Muslim world <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern world is getting better or getting worse?
• Do you think <strong>the</strong> Muslim world is committed to improving relations between <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern <strong>and</strong> Muslim worlds?
• Do you think <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern World is committed to improving relations between <strong>the</strong> Muslim <strong>and</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern worlds?

For Index calculation purposes, each of <strong>the</strong> items is scored as “0” for a negative (or unfavourable) response <strong>and</strong> “1” for
a positive (or favourable) response. Those scores are <strong>the</strong>n summed, producing a total of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9
for each respondent. The sum is <strong>the</strong>n divided by 9 to produce a final individual-level Index score ranging from 0 to 1
that is <strong>the</strong>n aggregated to produce a country-level Index score.
An average weighted by <strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> population over 15 years of age is used to produce an Index score for each
category (Muslim, <strong>West</strong> <strong>and</strong> overall). The country-level Index score for all countries in each category is multiplied by that
country’s total population over 15 years of age, creating a weighted Index score. The weighted Index scores <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>
population totals are <strong>the</strong>n summed across <strong>the</strong> relevant countries. Finally, <strong>the</strong> sum of <strong>the</strong> weighted Index scores is divided
by <strong>the</strong> total population for <strong>the</strong> category, producing one weighted Index score for <strong>the</strong> entire category.
