“You are such a complete mess, Booker,” Katie
gloats as I totter out of her study feeling like a
drunken sailor on shore leave. I resist the temptation
to point out that it is hardly surprising that I am not
looking my best considering I have just spent a most
unpleasant ten minutes wriggling and squirming
across her lap like a hooked fish whilst having my
bum pummeled with a leather-soled sandal.
The hallways are beginning to fill up as gals
prepare themselves for another day at Woodys. I nod
at a few chums as I hurry along. Despite my best
efforts to appear nonchalant I can’t help noticing that
several gals give me knowing glances and
sympathetic smiles.
It is not surprising really. It is very hard to
disguise the after-effects of a damn good drubbing.
The stiff legged gait and the slightly haunted look in
the eyes are always tell-tale signs. The fact that I
