This was a long Spartan room furnished with twelve beds, lockers and side-tables. There was no privacy, not even a curtain between each bed. This would be where I slept for the next four years. Each new intake is comprised of twelve inmates. I recognized several from the newspapers and of course we all recognized Debs who was one of the most famous women in the world. We all introduced ourselves nervously and of course the conversations turned to the spankings we had all received. There was an atmosphere of considerable indignation and also some trepidation in the dorm. I don’t know whether I was joking or just trying to be comforting but I blurted out, “But it was only whops.” They looked at me is if I had two heads but that unplanned observation has followed me around for years and created the myth that I am impervious to pain.
