Universities, as pillars of cultural resource management, need to<br />
answer some important questi<strong>on</strong>s, such as: How do the various<br />
fields, i.e. archaeology, anthropology, the physical sciences, tourism<br />
administrati<strong>on</strong>, marketing, and public management, interact and<br />
collaborate to effectively manage culture and heritage in the most<br />
culturally sensitive manner? How do these fields c<strong>on</strong>tribute to and<br />
merge for the wise use of heritage for tourism purposes, am<strong>on</strong>g<br />
others?<br />
Universities should be able to provide a venue for such discourses<br />
to be explored further through a multi-disciplinary approach.<br />
Nearly a decade ago, I c<strong>on</strong>ceptualised two programmes <strong>on</strong> arts<br />
management and cultural resource management that can be<br />
improved if universities see fit to offer. I hope to inspire and entice<br />
universities in the regi<strong>on</strong> to work with <strong>SPAFA</strong> <strong>on</strong> a fruitful c<strong>on</strong>sortium<br />
<strong>on</strong> a multi-disciplinary approach to cultural management.<br />
Below are a number of courses or modules, which I classified in<br />
related clusters, that I think are keys to a successful and holistic<br />
programme <strong>on</strong> cultural management, especially for CRM professi<strong>on</strong>als<br />
in the Southeast Asian regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
1. Cultural Resource Management<br />
Social Impact of Arts and Culture<br />
Discusses the theories and c<strong>on</strong>cepts of cultural resource management<br />
at the local and internati<strong>on</strong>al levels. These modules/courses<br />
also examine the impact of the arts and culture <strong>on</strong> society in various<br />
aspects from the past until the present as well as future trends.<br />
2. <strong>Heritage</strong> Sites and Artefacts Interpretati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> Collecti<strong>on</strong>s Management<br />
Discusses and studies the meaning of the heritage sites and<br />
artefacts in relati<strong>on</strong> to their social significance in the past and the<br />
present. This cluster also discusses practices <strong>on</strong> management of<br />
heritage collecti<strong>on</strong>s, and examines issues c<strong>on</strong>cerning site management,<br />
including the use of heritage site, site maintenance, the role<br />
of heritage sites for society, community empowerment, future<br />
directi<strong>on</strong>s and challenges.<br />
3. Cultural <strong>Heritage</strong> C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />
World <strong>Heritage</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong><br />
Examines the theories and practices of heritage c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
including stakeholders’ participati<strong>on</strong> in c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>. World<br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong> studies the World <strong>Heritage</strong> at the internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
level and regi<strong>on</strong>al levels with the focus <strong>on</strong> World <strong>Heritage</strong><br />
in Southeast Asia. Also, this group discusses the ethics of tourism<br />
and the wise use of cultural heritage for tourism.<br />
4. Management in Arts and Culture<br />
Human Resource Management Issues<br />
Provides necessary management knowledge at the macro and micro<br />
level through the examinati<strong>on</strong> of theories and c<strong>on</strong>cepts c<strong>on</strong>cerning<br />
planning as well as policies and decisi<strong>on</strong>-making activities of art<br />
and cultural instituti<strong>on</strong>s at the internati<strong>on</strong>al level. Also explores<br />
Human Resource Management Issues which are an integral comp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />
defining successful and competent leadership and management.<br />
