(2/1/10)Get Ready for ‘HumaneWatch’There’s no denying it: The gargantuan Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is now the animal rights industry’s richest and most powerful player. HSUS is exercising its prohibitionmindedinfluence in every corner of America, over everything from the pets in our homes to the eggs on our plates. HSUS pursues a PETA-like agenda with a budget and seriousness thatPETA itself has never been able to match.Ohio provides a timely example. Last November, Ohio voters voted overwhelmingly (with 63% “yes” votes) to amend the State Constitution by creating a Livestock Care Standards Board. Allissues of “animal care and well-being” in the Buckeye State are now entrusted to this Board. But that presents a problem for HSUS, which would rather abolish livestock farming than see itresponsibly regulated.As we predicted back in September—before “Issue 2” even got a vote—HSUS is now moving to supersede the judgment of Ohio’s livestock authorities with its own ballot initiative. TodayHSUS officially put the wheels in motion. If this counter-attack succeeds, the Livestock Care Standards Board will be required to adopt HSUS-recommended standards, whether or not theyare in the best interests of animals.Next week we will re-launch HumaneWatch.org, and you are cordially invited to lend a hand as it grows. Abuse is starving to death and being disemboweled by coyotes while you are still alive because you are too weak to get up."Dr. Temple GrandinWe also have the video embedded on the front page of our website at http://UnitedOrgsoftheHorse~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Good News!A hastily scheduled hearing of the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee in regards to HR 503--a bill that would make it a felony to transport a horse that could be used forhuman food--was canceled as soon as it became clear that the tribes were standing shoulder to shoulder in opposition with the United Organizations of the Horse.We were jointly requesting time to testify about the horrific unintended consequences that would inevitably result if these bills were implemented.The tribes are backed up by a strong resolution condemning HR 503 and its counterpart S 727 passed by the National Congress of American Indians.Yet another resolution supporting the position of the United Organizations of the Horse was passed by the State Ag and Rural Leaders--a gathering of agriculture committee chairs andvice chairs from state legislatures and Canadian provinces just days before this now canceled hearing was scheduled for Feb. 2nd.UOH/UHF First Group to Meet with GAO Study TeamOn January 19th leaders of the United Organizations of the Horse and the United Horsemen's Front were the first organizations to meet with the Government Accountability Office's (GAO)team that has just commenced a thorough study of the effect of the horse plants closing on the welfare of horses themselves, and on farm and ranch economy.
