2 Study AreaThe main reason for us to choose Uganda as country to perform our study in is the goodrelations and the ongoing cooperation between Makerere University in Kampala andGIS-Centre at the University of Lund. Makerere University has good expertise withinGIS, and could therefore be of assistance and guidance. Uganda is also a poor country,with a very limited access to electricity, and therefore in great need of assistance in theirdevelopment.2.1 UgandaUganda stretches between 4° N and 2° S latitude and 29° and 35° E longitude(go.hrw.com). It is a very fertile country located in East Africa, with an area about halfthe size of Sweden (241,139 km 2 ) and a population of 26.4 million people in 2004. Thecapital is Kampala with a population of 1.2 million. Other major cities are Jinja, Mbaleand Mbarara, as can be seen in Figure 2.1 (www.cia.gov). The southern border of thecountry is located just south of the equator, but the main part is on the East Africanplateau (Johannesson, 2003). It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east,Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerlyZaire, to the west.Figure 2.1 Uganda with major cities and lakes.
