2 Study AreaThe ma<strong>in</strong> reason <strong>for</strong> us to choose <strong>Uganda</strong> as country to per<strong>for</strong>m our study <strong>in</strong> is the goodrelations and the ongo<strong>in</strong>g cooperation between Makerere University <strong>in</strong> Kampala andGIS-Centre at the University of Lund. Makerere University has good expertise with<strong>in</strong>GIS, and could there<strong>for</strong>e be of assistance and guidance. <strong>Uganda</strong> is also a poor country,with a very limited access to electricity, and there<strong>for</strong>e <strong>in</strong> great need of assistance <strong>in</strong> theirdevelopment.2.1 <strong>Uganda</strong><strong>Uganda</strong> stretches between 4° N and 2° S latitude and 29° and 35° E longitude(go.hrw.com). It is a very fertile country located <strong>in</strong> East Africa, with an area about halfthe size of Sweden (241,139 km 2 ) and a population of 26.4 million people <strong>in</strong> 2004. Thecapital is Kampala with a population of 1.2 million. Other major cities are J<strong>in</strong>ja, Mbaleand Mbarara, as can be seen <strong>in</strong> Figure 2.1 (www.cia.gov). The southern border of thecountry is located just south of the equator, but the ma<strong>in</strong> part is on the East Africanplateau (Johannesson, 2003). It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east,Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, <strong>for</strong>merlyZaire, to the west.Figure 2.1 <strong>Uganda</strong> with major cities and lakes.
