The projection and reference system is the sameas in the data received from NFA and the scale is 1:25,000. We also received populationdata from the 2002 Population and Housing Census, for all sub counties in the studyarea. 4.2.2 Quality Assessment of Elevation DataBefore the analysis could begin we had to make sure that all data were correct. Theassessment of the contour data became subjective, since it was performed visually byusing ArcScene. We found many elevation errors among the contour lines. Many of theerrors probably arose when the contours were digitized. The contours were digitizedfrom 1:50,000 maps in the same grid system mentioned earlier. Therefore when manygrids were joined together there arose vertical edge errors, and it seems as if nocorrection between the layers were done. These errors were visually detected using a 3Denhancement function, called vertical exaggeration. The attribute table of the contourlayer was corrected until we were unable to find any more errors.4.2.3 InterpolationIn order to perform our analysis we needed a continuous surface with elevation (DEM)over our study area. This surface would later be used to calculate height differences inrivers to find potential sites for small-scale hydropower stations. What we had to do wasan interpolation of our contour lines to produce the wanted surface. Probably the mostimportant aspect when producing continuous topographic data with differentinterpolation methods is the accuracy in representation of terrain shape and drainagestructure. The locally adaptive ANUDEM gridding procedure has proven to be able toproduce representations with high quality from point, contour and streamline data. Anexample of input data can be seen in Figure 4.3. These data are particularly appropriatefor producing DEMs with a cell ranging form 5 to 200 meters, where source contourdata tend to accurately reflect reality (Gallant & Wilson, 2000).Figure 4.3 Contour with 5-meter equidistance, stream and point elevation data.Source: Gallant & Wilson, 2000.35
