Properties of Quadrant ® PPSU (polyphenylsulphone)<br />

Service temperature:<br />

+180/210 °C (20.000 hours/temporary)<br />

Temporary = only a few hours, where no or only low loads may<br />

occur<br />

Non-reinforced amorphous thermoplastic with superior<br />

mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.<br />

Main properties of Quadrant ® 1000 PPSU:<br />

• High upper continuous service temperature limit in air 180 °C<br />

• High mechanical strength over a wide temperature range<br />

• Excellent hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam<br />

sterilisation)<br />

• High toughness even at low temperatures<br />

• High dimensional stability<br />

• Very good resistance to high-energy radiation<br />

(gamma and X rays)<br />

• Good electrical and dielectric behaviour<br />

• Physiologically safe (suitable for contact with foodstuffs)<br />

1.24 g/cm 3<br />

Service temperature:<br />

+150/180 °C (20.000 hours/temporary)<br />

Non-reinforced amorphous thermoplastic with superior<br />

mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.<br />

Main properties of Quadrant ® 1000 PSU:<br />

• High upper continuous service temperature limit in air 150 °C<br />

• High mechanical strength and rigidity over a wide temperature<br />

range<br />

• Excellent hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam<br />

sterilisation)<br />

• Very high dimensional stability<br />

• Good resistance to high-energy radiation (gamma and X rays)<br />

• Good electrical and dielectric behaviour<br />

• Physiologically safe (suitable for contact with foodstuffs)<br />

• Translucent, non-optical grade<br />

• Good hydrolysis resistance<br />

Comment:<br />

All amorphous thermoplastics are prone to stress cracking. Liquid<br />

coolants with an oil-soluble base must not be used during cutting.<br />

Preference should be given to water or compressed air for these<br />

materials.<br />

Grade: Quadrant ® PPSU colour black<br />

Semi-finished products are made from RADEL ® . This material<br />

offers better impact strength and chemical resistance than PEI<br />

1000 and Quadrant ® PSU and also provides outstanding resistance<br />

to hydrolysis. This material can actually be steam sterilised to an<br />

almost unlimited extent.<br />

Application: Quadrant ® PPSU<br />

The material properties described mean the material is perfect<br />

for use in the medical field for devices that have to be steam<br />

sterilised over and over again. Furthermore, the raw material used<br />

to manufacture Quadrant ® PPSU semi-finished products meets the<br />

requirements of Class VI of the USP standard (medical engineering<br />

and pharmaceutical industries).<br />

Comment:<br />

All amorphous thermoplastics are prone to stress cracking. Liquid<br />

coolants with an oil-soluble base must not be used during cutting.<br />

Preference should be given to water or compressed air for these<br />

materials. Quadrant ® 1000 PSU is not UV-resistant.<br />

Grade: Quadrant ® 1000 PSU colour natural (yellow, transparent)<br />

This material offers very good radiation resistance, good ionic<br />

cleanliness and superior chemical and hydrolysis resistance.<br />

Compared to PEI 1000, Quadrant ® 1000 PSU has a somewhat<br />

lower property profile and is often used as a substitute for<br />

polycarbonate if a higher temperature resistance, better chemical<br />

resistance and the ability to steam sterilise are required.<br />

Areas of the food processing industry – such as milking machines,<br />

pumps, valves, filter plates and heat exchangers, as well as<br />

for medical engineering components which need to be cleaned<br />

and sterilised repeatedly<br />
